That would account for him not being with Kate Jane in 1901 census as he was in South Africa

1881 - KAte Jane DAFFURN at home in Gloucestershire age 11
1891 - age 21 Kate Jane DAFFORN Housemaid, Domestic Servant to the Barham family @ 1 ST Philips Place, Birmingham
1889-1893 - William on "Home Service"
1893 - 3/1896 - William In Gibraltar

Would guess that at some point he is serving in the Gloucestershire or Birmingham area and meets KAte. They are married not long after his return from Gibraltar. (a good place to serve HM !!)

The 1866 marriage posted on page 1 as a ? between Charles and Elizabeth Yeo would look to be correct as in 1891 Elizabeth has Yeo visitors with her on census (unless it's a coincidence!)

Can't find a suitable Elizabeth Yeo in the 1861 census. THere are 3 in the 1851 - one born Okehampton daughter of William and Jane and 2 born Inwardleigh, just north of Okehampton. It might need her marriage certificate to determine her father to take the Yeo line back.

Thank you very much everyone for all the info it has answered so many questions.
One last thing if William died in1940 Barnstaple and Kate died 1950 Tavistock would you be able to find their addresses where they were living.

Once again thank you for your help.

Sheila

That information is not going to be available online, Sheila. You would most probably need to get a copy of their death certificates
