Does anyone know if Births announcements were in local newspapers in Messingham, as I was wondering if the Birth of William George Stow born on 27th February 1890 Messingham would be there, as there is still no sign of a Birth entry to be able to obtain a Birth Certificate only Baptism on 18th April. As all his Brothers and Sisters were all registered and born in Dalton Lancashire the Parents obviously knew to register. It is such a mystery and still dont know why Parents ended up in Messingham for William's birth although William Stow (Father ) was himself born in Messingham. Is there any way of finding out where they were living in February March 1890 His Older sister and brother were only 4 and 3 so they must have lived somewhere before they returned to Dalton (1891 census Dalton shows they were back there) Sorry for long message Just hoping for another lead to try Thanks everyone Pam

This is the one Eileen suggested. It is the only one I can see for Lincs for 1890 although a long time after his birth.

I have looked at the adoption angle and looked at William's (1865) sisters. No obvious spare children around and the sisters all married.. Although Francis A married, can't find her in 1891. Martha probably too young to have a child in 1890. Tis a mystery.

many s thanks for the time you have taken to help me firnd a birth entry for William George Stow born 27th February 1890 Messingham. I did check out the one in Caistor quits some time ago but is not the right one as I know his date of birth. To tighten up the search a bit and find out the maximum time they could have been in Messingham for I have the following details.
The older brother of William George was John and he was born on 22nd February 1888 in Dalton Ulverston Lancashire.
William George was born 27th Feb 1890 in Messingham and they were back in Dalton for the 1891 census where the family remained for many years and had all the other children there all with Birth certificates.
This gives a possible window between John and William births of 3 years of which they could have been in Messingham But why that is I just dont know I hope to find some more clues with everyones help to solve this very long mystery
I did think of checking out the death of Walter Stow in March quarter 1890 Lincoln at age O to see if any links there. Willing to keep trying all scenarios Many thanks for your help Pam

I would have thought if William Snr had returned to Lincs it would be for employment. The Frodingham Iron works were resurrected in 1889.
Unfortunately still a Glanford Brigg reg.

I note that William George was not with the family in 1901 and possibly working as a farm servant (giving his dob of 1887) and that he boarded in 1911 in Dalton. Wonder why he chose not to live with family.

Are you sure that the 1890 dob is correct?

Thank you for taking time to try to help with finding William George Stow. I have copies of Police Records from Lancashire when William joined the force and his date of birth is 27th February 1890 Messingham. I know that he met his wife when they were both in service He married Sarah Ann Langhorn on July 3rd 1912 At the time of marriage William George was living at Butler Green Chadderton and was a Police Constable. His Wife was living at Stainton. William George died in 1949 age 59 years His Father William Stow died on 13th July 1911 Barrow in Furness Hope one day this mystery will come together Many Thanks Pam

I continue to search for William George Stow (sometimes spelt with e on end Stowe) I have many details of his siblings and some exact dates of birth for them There were 15 children in total born to William Stow and wife Ellen. I will list them in hope that someone may recognize one and help solve this mystery.

Thomas Born 15th Nov 1891

Frank June quarter 1893

All the children were born in Dalton Ulverston Lancashire at home except William George
I agree it is strange that we cant find him as an 11 year old in 1901 census. Very young to "leave home" The mystery deepens
Thanks for any help or suggestions Pam

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 19 Feb 2012 14:36

going back to that baptism in Messingham

If that is the right William George then does it not prove that he was not born into the Dalton Stow family as the mothers name is stated as Ann not Ellen

does it definitely say 'son' on the 1891 census and listed between John & Thomas?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 19 Feb 2012 14:47

co-incidence??

Births Dec 1886 (>99%)
Harris William George Glanford B. 7a 685

same age as 1901 and same surname as Ellen's maiden name?

(clutching at the proverbial straws!)

Pamela

Pamela Report 19 Feb 2012 15:08

Many thanks for all your effort I believe the baptism is the correct one as if you look close at the larger image as we did with '"William Jack" it could easily be Ellen and if someone wrote this from hearing it " Ell Ann" could have been written slightly wrong Also there is still no Birth Certificate for child with the name as I have seen copies of any posibilities. The 1891 census shows Mary as eldest child born 1887 John is next born 22nd February 1888 (i have his birth certificate) and William George is next born in 1890 on 27th February Thomas was not born till after William and is not on 1891 census. Yes it definately says Son Thanks again Pam

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 19 Feb 2012 16:51

having now looked at the image I totally agree that it is definitely William George and the E of the transcribed Ann looks similar to the E in what is probably Ellen on the previous page

(I said I was clutching at straws!!!!)

Dont mind clutching at straws if it means we find it eventually Need to find a relative such as Granchild that might hold the clue to the mystery Thanks for your help. Pam
