How do you know whether they def are your relatives or do you just have to take an educated guess?

The spelling was frequently out as many of them were illiterate.
You need as many birth and marriage certificates as you can get to help confirm.
So you work back step by step using the certificates for information.

You really do need to find James and Marys marriage so that you know his fathers name.

You need birth certificates for Mother's maiden name, and marriage certificates for Fathers' names.
Otherwise you are just guessing, and educated guesses do not count.
