Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 19 Feb 2012 11:42

A family from England were in Ontario in 1851.
Parents were George and Sarah BELCHAMBER, who had married in St Andrew Holburn in 1834, then had 3 children in England including Sarah in 1839 ...
Births Mar 1839
Bellchamber Sarah Dickinson Westminster 1 359 .......

and the family were 'lost' after the 1841 census.

Trying to establish where George was born ( ie. which county)
Does the 1851 Canada census show this please?

Trying to help a friend sort out this family.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 19 Feb 2012 12:35

Did this Sarah Dickenson marry in 1856 in Canada to John Wicket who was 13 years older than her? John was also from England.

Gwyn in Kent

So sorry... so many phone calls !

Many thanks to you all for your help.

George who died in 1850 is probably the George baptised in1816, son of Henry and Elizabeth...Henry was a farrier.
This George's dates would fit better with the burial. In 1841 he may be a labourer 25, in St John's the Evangalist, Middlesex.

Friend has birth certs. for 2 of George and Sarah's children, but not for John born Midhurst district.... Although she has no follow-on from that John anywhere else in parish records or census.
From his name it would fit being Sarah's son, but one cannot assume, I know.

Friend had heard that there may be a connection to John WICKET in Canada, but has no details or dates. Any help with this would be great please.

IF, big IF, the George who married Sarah CHAPMAN was born in Sussex, he may be in my own tree, so we are trying to collect all the facts to see if the pieces fit.

Well that census confirms one of the baptisms as it is the same address of Gardeners Lane.

Why are there no children with George and Sarah in 1841?
Have you found Sarah (1839)?

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 19 Feb 2012 15:15

Well I can't find any passenger lists under the names of Sarah Belchamber or Sarah Wickett or John Wickett. I can't find a baptism for Sarah Dickenson Belchamber only her birth.

On the census I looked at on someones tree (for Canada) it said John was from England as well as Sara born 1826 and she born 1839.

Thank you for looking Mel.

Friend has been looking at trees on Ancestry linked to these names and knows for a fact that there is wrong information out there, ...unfortunately being shared by the look of things, sometimes with no sources so we are trying to establish facts.

One person in Canada writes that George bought some land over there in 1840s. As young George, the son, would have been too young, so this could be George the beer house keeper.

A Benjamin Belchamber of Petworth, Sussex left a Will with his wife Elizabeth named as beneficiary. On Elizabeth's death the money was to go to their sons, George and John. This son George was baptised in Sussex in 1806 and as Elizabeth d. 1844 the timing would fit for the money to be avaiable to emmigrate and possibly buy some land.

All theory, but difficult to prove that the George who married Sarah Chapman was born in Sussex and later moved to Canada.

A tree on Ancestry has George Bellchamber 1804 sussex buying some land in Canada in 1845. this is what it says.

Date
15 Sep 1845
Location
Oneida, Haldimand, Ontario, Canada
Description
Purchase of Lot 4, 100 Acres Through Indian Land Sale

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 19 Feb 2012 16:04

There's also a tree on Ancestry that has George b 1806 as dying in 1838. However, it goes on to list 1851, 1861 & 1871 census for him!

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 19 Feb 2012 16:31

Mel and MarieCeleste

Thank you for the extra information.
I note that the purchase of land was in the area where young Sarah and John are located in 1851/ 52 census, so that might be worth following up.

MarieCeleste... Great isn't it?
Obvious mistakes for everyone to copy..?
Friend has been through GRO and doesn't think George died in England.
She has contacted someone about this wrong information and has had a good response from one researcher, but until we can prove a few details it's hard to convince some people that they are on the wrong track.... even when they 'die' before they are seen in census.
