Karen, According to the info below the BMD registeres are now held at Suffolk (Stowmarket) and Suffolk (Lowestoft).
I have added below contact details for both, if you ring them they should be able to tell you which office should have the birth record for your rellie,
then you could apply for them to search for the birth cert for your Matilda

Porkie_Pie Report 23 Feb 2012 23:16

Just checked the index from jan quarter 1863 to dec quarter 1866 and nothing but their are no Aldous births for july quarter 1864,?

So i think it may be worth trying the registry office where the birth should have been registered, as another possibility is that it was missed off the index

Wonder if it's worth doing a search page by page on the birth index just incase it is mistranscribed?

Jax, Births were sometimes registered late even after it became a legal requirement in 1875 to register within 6 weeks

plus I cannot find a death or any census info for a Agnes M after her birth,

plus people did add forenames between birth registration and baptism, that why you have column 10 on a birth cert.

My grand father was always known by the name William but nicknamed harry every one always thought it was because his dad was also William,
on all the census's and his marriage cert plus death cert he was down as William but after he died and was buried whilst clearing his house out my mum found his original birth cert and his name was actually Henry William and his father was William Henry,

So nothing is to be taken for granted in this game.

I have found that with one of my gt gt grandmothers she was baptised but not registered but the rest of her siblings were...so it did happen, maybe just overlooked at the time?

Karen

Karen Report 23 Feb 2012 21:25

Yes Roy I am sure that is definitely her christening july 1864 .I did see that date on Deborrahs tree(as birth date though) that she shared with me a few months ago but have been unable to contact her as to where she got the date from.

Its just strange that Matilda's birth wasn't registered as all her siblings were !!

Regards Karen

jax Report 23 Feb 2012 21:08

Agnes M was born in 1866 Matilda was baptised in 1864 I cannot see how that could be her

Porkie_Pie Report 23 Feb 2012 20:54

Karen, I take it that you have discounted the possible birth i posted above

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Feb 2012 20:47

There is an unsourced tree on Ancestry that has her dob as 31 Jul 1864, but it has no parents for her.

EDIT: There are numerous trees have that date - yours is one of them.

The reason why no birth can be found is quite likely that it was never registered. There were no penalties for not registering births until around 1874, so many before that time just went unrecorded.
