Hi, Can someone help me? My Gradnfather was in 6th Dragoon Guards 3rd Troop 6th Cavalry Reg 1918. Hos dob was 16/1/1898 but there is a good chance he lied about his age. His name was Elliis William Edwards or might have been Roberts (his step dads name). |

Unfortunately lots of WW1 records were destroyed by fire in WW2 when the building they were stored in was bombed. some were saved although damaged by fire which is why they are known as the Burnt Records. . |

6 Dragoon Guards were part of 4 Cavalry Brigade of 2 Cavalry Division at the time you are seeking information. The War Diary for 6DG will tell you all or most of what you need to know. It is at Kew Archives under WO95/1137 and runs from their arrival in France in August 1914. |

Thanks all for your replies. He was not the one from Accrington. My grandather survived the war and died in 1973 in Bedwellty. |

`This is not the family. There are so many with the same name from the same place. Ellis Williams had no surname on his birth cert. His mam, Jane Ellen Edwards married david roberts shortky after his birth. He was brought up as ellis Willim Roberts but changed his name to Ellis William Edwards as soon as he could I dont know whether he enrolled in the army as Edwards or Roberts. His marriage cert name him as Edwards and his children are named Edwrads. |
