1911 Canadian census is free here:

Her name is mistranscribed Selma here.

Thanks, Margee. I did try the link you give but couldn't find her! She is actually Selina.

Margee, Is it possible to search online for Ontaria marriages for around 1908/1911?

Edit: sorry, K, Thank you, too.

MargaretM Report 4 Mar 2012 15:14

Selina, 34, Fred'k, 11, John, 8 and Ellen, 5 arrived Quebec, 24 July 1908 aboard the "Lake Erie" to join husband in Ottawa.

Note: She's Selma on the 1911 census on Automated Genealogy.

Thanks, again, Margee. So, she wasn't a widow when she travelled to Canada.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Mar 2012 16:15

Curious! The 1911 census says that he emigrated 1900. That's 8 years before she did! And there were children born during that time. Maybe she was a widow. I'm off to look at that passenger list again.

Edit: Oops! it does have W for widow. But it also says "going to join husband". Something else is written after husband but I can't make it out.

Margee, I am trying to help a distant relative with this one. She is descended from Selina's son, John. Selina was married to a Frederick William Brown, in London in 1894.

Apparently there is a family story that Frederick died and she re-married to his brother, George. Frederick's father's name on the marriage cert is John. We cannot find a John Brown with sons Frederick and George! Selina doesn't help matters by changing her age! She was older than both Frederick and George, so I think she just lied to lessen the age difference - she was actually born in 1867 not 1877 as on the 1911.

There is this Selina in 1901 listed as married - on the passenger list in 1908 I think it says Fisherman after husband - the husband's occupation as with other wifes in the list - Edit - Sorry just read your post and you will have this

Now I'm confused, Potty. According to the 1911 census son Fred was 14 but father George only 29. Was he really only 15 when son was born? Or is he indeed 2nd husband of Selina? But then was she a widow Brown who married a Brown?

Edit: Sorry, Potty, just read your post, must learn to refresh first!

Potty

Potty Report 4 Mar 2012 16:39

Thanks, K, but that is not the Selina we are looking for. Our Selina was Selina Frances Hodder and we do have her in 1901 with Frederick. It is the (supposed) marriage to George that is we can't find.

Potty

Potty Report 4 Mar 2012 16:44

Yes, it is very confusing, Margee. I have been looking at this since midday, as well as a few hours yesterday, and wish I could refresh myself!

Had enough for today - if anybody posts anything else, I will be back tomorrow.

But, please don't spend time going backwards with Selina - I have everything on her.

Edit: Margee, just noticed your addition to the passenger list, so she was a widow when she emigrated and was going to join her "husband" - presumably the brother George she is supposed to have married - will look at the Ontario marriage link you gave earlier - but not tonight!

Thanks both of you.

I now have an image of Selina's marriage to Frederick Brown but it is not very clear. It is Frederick's father's occupation that I am trying to find.

If I PM the image as an attachment, could somebody look at it for me? I know what I think it is (and want it to be!) but would like other opinions.

Thanks

Agree, Tracey, very unclear. I think the image is of the original cert from 1894, so I would expect it to be a bit faded!

If I zoom it right up, I think I can make it out but the person I am helping doesn't agree with what I think.

Anyone else like to have a go?

Thanks Gwyn, have sent it attached to a PM.
