That's it! Terriffic Lyn, thank you!

For Stacey - Chick I have the marriage record but not the marriage certificate.

name: John Hamilton Stacey
event: Marriage
event date: 23 Feb 1865
event place: St Mary's, Beaminster, Dorset, England
gender: Male
marital status: Single
father: John Stacey
spouse: Martha Chick
spouse's marital status: Single
spouse's father: John Chick
digital folder number: 004508391

But the Stacey - Hamilton link is the explanation for the "Hamilton Stacey" that keeps on cropping up of which there are three of which I am aware.

Thank you very much, Lyn!

So now, off we go again looking for Ann's and John's details.

Lynski

Lynski Report 12 Mar 2012 08:55

It could have something to do with John's middle name???

marriage date: 11 Jun 1835
marriage place: Beaminster, Dorset, England
indexing project (batch) number: M15803-1

Have you got their marriage certificate?

KeithG Report 12 Mar 2012 07:46

Yes, Lynski, that would be possible, and that would give me his mother's name. To gain confidence in this interpretation I'd like to find JHS's marriage record.

Lynski Report 12 Mar 2012 01:22

Just going back to your comment about there being another JHS - one thing to consider is that he could have been christened when he was older??????

Thank you for checking the images, Christina, there's wealth of detail there, isn't there! I'll try looking on google street view to look at the houses - although without a number it may be difficult (if the house stil exists of corse).

It just says buried in the parish of Beaminster.

Ceremony performed by J H Stonehouse.

Annie Elizabeth Stacey.

Abode Beaminster (died at 1 Bedford Place, Bridport.)

Buried on the 9th November 1943.

Age 76.

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 11 Mar 2012 23:50

Looking at the images(there are two of them), Martha and Annie have filled in their own form (signed by Annie E Stacey) ....and state relation to head as Visitor. Theirs are the only names on this form.

William MacKendrick is a Director of an Oil Company, employing a Governess and 3 Servants.

Hugh Robinson is a visting Solicitor.

William's address is The Cedars. Martha And Annie's address is Thornton House.

So it doesn't look as though they are in the same property, both of which have eleven rooms.

Perhaps both houses were owned by William MacKendrick?

And that death record ties up another loose end, thank you again Christina. It confirms the middle name as Elizabeth, my mother referred once to an Aunt Lizzie and another time to an Aunt Annie but told the same storey for each, suggesting they might be the same person. She was buried at St Andrews Church, White Sheet Hill, Beaminster I believe - is there any way to check where the Annie in the death record you found is buried?

KeithG Report 11 Mar 2012 23:18

That's excellent, Christina, thank you. Would you say this was likely to be a hotel / lodging house? William taking in lodgers to help pay for help with the kids as his wife is no longer with him? I suppose it could be a well-to-do house with servants. Is there any way to tell?

I've been browsing the marriage records on GR and I've found an Elizabeth Ann V Stacey married in Ecclesall Bierlow - which was where Martha and JHS lived. Can someone please find out more about this marriage and whether it could be the same Ann?

KeithG

KeithG Report 11 Mar 2012 21:50

Thanks Shirley, that 1891 census says Annie was born in Sheffield like her brothers, and the 1901 says JHS was a travelling clerk - which he certainly seems to be!

Are those marriage records, Shirley? If so it's a possible for Ann. Is there any way of getting further information about her?

KeithG Report 11 Mar 2012 21:32

Thanks Julie. John the father died young. I believe (my interpretation of the evidence so far) that he married in Dorset, went to Sheffield - presumably for a job, died, and his wife and kids moved back to Beaminster to live with Martha's parents.

@Lynski - oh no! not another JHS ;_) This is really strange. I am / was reasonably confident of JHS senior's birth date as 1838, the 1861 census gives abt 1839 and I have a registration date of 3Q1838, I know nothing of his parents yet. So if this really is another one I'd love to understand how he fits in.

That marriage for JHS fits nicely, thank you. And his father's name is ..... John!

And the 1871 census is the evidence for Martha and her children (x3) moving back to live with her parents. Circmstantial evidence for there only being three children.

@Shirley - is that the 1871 census record? I think it would fit with JHS going to Sheffield for work on his own and then sending for Martha when he was settled?

Thanks all!
