Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone could help me access my great-grandfather's brother's death certificate and details. Richard Mutten died in 1868 in New Brunswick, and is buried in St.John's Cemetery. Went off to sea at the age of 16 and died aged 22. So sad. Would like to know the story.
Any help would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Glynis

Hi Ann,
He was born in Polperro, as were his parents Richard and Susannah. He was the eldest son, born in 1846. There's often confusion around the spelling of Mutten. Even in the Cornwall Records Office they've got him and his brother down as Mutton in the archives.
But it really is MuttEn.

Thanks Ann, anything you can find, or if you could point me in the direction, I'd be so grateful.

Yes, that's them. They moved to Devonport after the first couple of children. And by 1881 Richard had already died. :-(

That's definitely them. But no trace of Richard, since he left home at 16, and therefore no further evidence on any census. All I know from the Cornwall Records Office is a reference to him by his sister Elizabeth, dedicating a book of his writings, and saying that he traveled to New Brunswick, died in 1868, and is buried in St.John's Cemetery. I'm wondering if St.John's cemetery in New Brunswick has records, and how to access them.

Thank you Ann.
I did get a reply from the New Brunswick Genealogical Society this week. They have found Richard's burial record, with his surname as Muttin.
Richard Mutten. Born Polperro 1846.
Went to sea aged 16, died in September 1868, aged 23. Buried in New Brunswick, St John's Church of England cemetery, Thorne Avenue, New Brunswick.
Because of the unusual surname, Richard's burial record says 'Muttin'.(mariner) - buried 15th September 1868, while serving on the ship DOURIS.
It seems to be a regular problem of transcription, so searching is quite difficult, and one has to be quite creative.
I'd love to be able to find out more information, but am stuck on where to go next. Where do I find his death certificate?
I'm very new at this, and would welcome any help.
The New Brunswick Genealogical Society very kindly said they'd put out my query in their newsletter, so that could lead to more information, hopefully.
Thanks for your help.
Any more pointers would be so useful.
