Morning Kathy,

I have taken another look at the death registrations in Canada for John Cummings, have found another one, which could be a possible; this one states that father was John Cumins from Scotland and Elizabeth Taunton from England. It shows that he had a wife, Mrs John Cummins. This John too died in 1921

Jax - then he was not married - two different Jojn Cummings' - just as there seems to be countless John & Mary Ann Cummings pairings.

Yes - i will be looking at all the paperwork very carefully. You know i've been searching for him for years. I often wondered why i couldn't find a death cert.
The fact that he's given his father John at Woolwich as his next of kin....adds some weight.

Anyway, i now have something to research---i've been baffled...this has been a difficult lot to trace.

I am still not convinced the Canadian records are for him, have been looking at the tree on ancestry and they have his wife as a single person living in England on the 1881 plus married and living in Canada??

When he left the army in 1885 he said he was not married but the canadian records have him married with children?

My grt-grandfather was William b 1848 Ns from 1871 till his death in 1914 he lived in Scotland. William & John's father John b1817/19 had Scots heritage.

Until today the last time i found or learnt anything about John was the 1871 Guildford census.

The Army is such a surprise to me & it must be him as JaX says the next of kin is down as John (dad) & the Woolwich address.

P.P.S. Did John have a middle name of LEVI? If so, a number of trees on ancestry showing John with wife Mary and family.

What was your great grandfather called, brother of John?

You know Lynne, i don't know, i've found so many errors within census information that i collect near hits & misses, as if he's not mine, he is still useful to me.

Although that census looks promising mother born Nova scotia father born Scotland on earlier census....I could not see any mention of wife and children on his army records

Shall have another look to see if I have missed something

Thanks so very much Lynne and Jax - i am so happy that we have found John after all these years. When he failed to appear on subsequent census & i couldn't find a death entry , it just made no sense. & i'd no idea what to do .
He was my grt-grandfather's brother.
The family had strong links to Canada.

Never heard of a Sapper either.

Looking at his Army records he was discharged in Dublin in 1885 and was not married at that time

The 1871 says he was a Sapper R.E (Royal engineers)

Whether he then went back to Canada?

He was born Halifax Nova Scotia & was an engine fitter.

On the 1851 he was 1 at Woolwich Kent 1861 also Woolwich aged 11

1871 Guilford Lodger age 21 1881 has a birthplace error - other than that it seems to fit him.
