Hi

I am after another look up - I could be pushing my luck here but this seems to be another name challenge! I have looked myself tonight on various sites but no joy.

I am trying to find Reuben Edward Kitt born 1862 Lambeth. I have found him and his wife Mary Lucy Ray on 1901 and 1911 census but can't find him before that. Reuben and Mary were both born about 1862 and married 1898 in Lambeth.

The reason being I am trying to find a connection between Reuben Kitt and Alice Kitt. Richard Ray b. 1839 had a son Richard William Ray born 1859 and a daughter Mary Lucy Ray born 1862. Richard born 1859 married Alice Kitt and Mary married a Reuben Kitt.

Agewise could be brother and sister but I just can't find them on earlier census. I think that the surname was originally Kett and Alice Kitt's father William came from Norfolk and her mother Mary from Ireland. I have only found them on the 1881 census.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Hi

Thank you Marie Celeste. That is definately the right Reuben and Mary and Wickham Street is where Richard and Alice Ray were living so he mus be related to Alice.

Thank you so much.

I can't find Reuben either. I wonder what his father's occupation was? He was certainly born as Reuben Kitt:

Births Sep 1862 (>99%)
KITT Reuben Edward St Olave 1d 47

The date is right but different mother's name - albeit he could have remarried.

Given his occupation in 1911 as

Inspector Of Messengers P O Retired Army Pensioner

He could well be in the Army in 1881 and 1891

Another mystery.

Thank you

Hi

Wrong age to be my Reuben - he was born 1862ish.

Could be another relation. I won't know until I find William and Mary earlier.

Christine - given that posts can happen quite quickly on here you need to say which record you're referring to!

Which is the wrong age for Reuben?

Christine

Christine Report 15 May 2012 20:51

Sorry

The post you sent for William Kitt born 1874 with father Reuben Kitt. marrying Mary Larry.

My Reuben was born about 1862/1863 - too young to be William Kitt's father.

Christine, I was thinking that the 1874 marriage for William Kitt was Reuben's father. It may follow that Reuben was named for William's own father.

Ignore the born 1874 - when adults were over 21 they often just had "full age" entered and the year of the marriage was put as the year of birth (a daft practice, in my opinion!).

Hi Andy

Thank you so much. I know he was in the army from the 1901/1911 census so could be him. The only thing that throws me is that this Reuben was born Middlesex and not Surrey which it should be for mine but thank you anyway this is something I can follow up.

Regards

Christine
