Hi Cupcake,
I am still not sure that Ethel's mother Mary Jane was married twice.
I think we have 2 different families who are being confused

Mary Jane Stokes married John Mawkes in 1876.
John Mawkes died in 1897. He was aged 51 and the coroners report states that he was born in Derbyshire, England.
If Mary Jane Stokes was this widow, and the same person who married William Alden in 1898,.
I cannot account for the birth of Arthur Alden in 1891 born to William Alden and Mary J. This birth was 7yrs before the death of John Mawes

Most of the children born to the Mawkes/ Stokes marriage were born in Lambton or Wallsend, NSW.
William Alden and Mary J lived in Mascot, NSW.
Distance between these two places is around 100miles

Children Arthur and Ethel, and Elizabeth all married as Alden.
Have yet to find marriage between May/Mary Alden and Jack Hogan, to determine her last name
Is 1898 the correct year for the William Alden/Mary J marriage?
Something is not quite right ......

Edit
From Ryerson index:
Ethel Duval died at Mascot on 15 Aug 1956.
She was 67yrs old = year of birth 1898/9

Elizabeth Kiloh died Jun 1951 and was 67yrs old = birth of 1887

Cupcakes
I am coming round to your way of thinking.
I now think Mary J Stokes and Mary J Mawkes are the same person.

All all her daughters ( mentioned on obits) were born within her first marriage, ( birth name Mawkes) but she may have separated from John Mawkes circa 1890 and living with William Alden.
Son Arthur born in 1891 is probably the son of William Alden, but Mary J was not free to marry until after the death of John Mawkes in 1897

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 about Mary J Stokes

Name: Mary J Stokes
Spouse Name: John Mawkes
Marriage Date: 1876
Marriage Place: New South Wales
Registration Place: Lambton, New South Wales
Registration Year: 1876
Registration number: 3693

John Mawkes dies in 1897.... and

I also wondered if Mary J Mawkes could be the daughter of John Mawkes with Mary Stokes who was born in 1878.
Married William Alden in 1898 at the age of 20yrs?
This doesn't really fit either....

Her children are listed on all the obits.
She was the mother of Ethel ( Duval) Elizabeth (Kiloh) May ( Hogan) and Arthur.
According to the Ryerson index... Ethel Duval was 67 yrs old at the time of her death. This equals a year of birth as 1888/9.
Ethel Duval ms Alden was only 10yrs younger than Mary J Mawkes (jnr)
Elizabeth Kiloh ms Alden was about 9yrs younger than Mary J Mawkes (jnr)
This leads me back to your conclusion that all of them were sisters.
All daughters of John Mawkes and Mary J Stokes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1922 death index for Mary J Alden states he father was called Thomas
It looks about right, because Mary J Stokes and John Mawkes also had a child called Thomas

But there is also another wee problem to sort out
Birth of William Mawkes in 1891 parents: John and Mary J
Birth of Arthur Mawkes in 1891 parents: John and Mary J
Birth of Arthur Alden in 1891parents: William and Mary j

Apologies
I mis-read details on William Mawkes 1890-1891

I dont really know exactly how Australian births are recorded but I did notice the 1891 birth info :
Arthur Mawkes has a REGISTRATION NO 35882
Arthur Alden,has a VOLUME NO D189101235

Does anyone know what the difference is?

I too think this is the same child
I will also be out of action for a day or two... ...work!

i dont know for sure but maybe the difference in registration number has something to do with William adopting Arthur and Ethel and the name change. Maybe they had to be registered as her married name back....raises more questions than answers ... some more homework for me to do. thanks again.
