Have found a 1919 newspaper article for a William John ClewEs being done for bigamy - he was a yard labourer residing in Upminster. He'd previously been done for bigamy in 1908 but haven't yet found anything on that.

Could be a complete coincidence .......

EDIT, found the first case - he was William John Clewes who used an alias of Smith. He married a woman in 1908 when his first wife, married 5 Dec 1905, was still alive. That case was at the Staffordshire Assizes.

So possibly not but will leave just in case.

BUT, William worked on the railways - he could have had wives all over the place. What if Edith was another but he didn't get caught out? Maybe that's why she was free to marry Mr Hipkiss?

Anyone have a view?

Not quite sure why Edith would remarry using the surname 'Clews' if her husband was a bigamist.....perhaps to save face?

Edwin Hipkiss married WIDOW (!!) Edith Lilian Eveline Clews 18/12/1908 at the Parish Church, Higher Broughton, Salford.
Her first marriage was as Edith Lilian Bromley, spinster in Nantwich 27/06/1903.

Just found Army Pension Records and guess what the Hipkiss theory is right!

Pension Records for Edwin Hipkiss state that he was married to Edith Lilian Eveline Claws (sic) at The Parish Church Higher Broughton Salford Salford on 18 December 1909 (it has Spinster crossed out then Widow). Then it states 1st marriage Edith Lilian Bromley Spinster Nantwich 27.6.03

That has definitely swayed me towards thinking that the bigamist in the newspaper article IS her former "husband". Obviously, the certificates for the suspect marriages would need to be purchased.

Have noticed on some Railway records that there is a "William John Clewes or Clews" mentioned.
