Would someone mind looking up the "Immigration & Travel" on Ancestry for me please - I have found a couple of references (in New York Passenger Lists and UK Incoming Passenger Lists) but don't have a sub to view, so would appreciate any details that can be found.

According to a family story, my great-aunt, Adeline Head (born Windsor in 1890 and living in Eton at the time), went on a business trip to New York sometime around 1910. I believe she was a stenographer and was accompanying a family friend - possibly called Metcalf/Metcalfe from Lancashire who was something to do with textiles.

Any details of dates, ships, how long she spent there, etc. would be really interesting - especially to my 94-yr-old father who knew Adeline very well and who passed the story on to me!

Thanks - and regards to all helpers!
..... Gill

Thanks to GB and Choccy for the "incoming" information. I've also just found an English "Adeline Hede" with the right date of birth in the 1910 US census for New York, so I might be able to work out some approximate dates of stay from that. Just another piece of the jigsaw!

Thanks to both. ... Gill

Choccy - no, that's the same Adeline ... she was back from the trip in time for the 1911 census! But apparently she never stopped talking about it when she was young!

Andrew - thanks so much for that .... I think the Immigration year rules out "my" Adeline Head, but it was worth a shot. I'm grateful to you.
Cheers! Gill

EDIT: Cailor / Tailor / Taylor .... maybe coincidence, probably not considering the occupation! Definitely worth pursuing,

Thanks again Andy!

Andrew Report 11 Jun 2012 22:34

Age is the same, so is the occupation, must be the same chap.

He returned to the UK on same ship as Adeline and is listed next to her on the passenger list.

Reckon so Andy ... now I just need to see if the New York Passenger Lists have an entry for Adeline Head in 1907 - the "year of immigration" to see if details match up. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
My Genes sub runs out in a couple of months so maybe I'll take out Ancestry instead - then I can dig a little deeper!.

Thanks for your help - it's opened up a new avenue of enquiry which is always exciting.

Oh wow! Brilliant! Thanks so much Andy.

I see she was down as "Adeline Taylor" (can't think why unless it was because she would have been a minor travelling with an older man - actually her mother's brother). I'd never have found her.

I can't wait to tell my Dad - he'll love all the extra info. Can't thank you enough.

According to the Ellis Island site which is free, Adeline Taylor was going to join her uncle, Thos Taylor, 133 Sweeney? St., Passaic, New Jersey and Thomas Taylor was going home to 133 Sweeney? St., Passaic. She gives name of nearest relative in England as brother Thos. Taylor, Windsor and he gives sister but no name, 11 Lee St., Lancaster.

In addition to the NY arrival info given, Thomas Taylor states he is going home, apparently to his wife. It's possible that the address in Passaic may be Summer Street.

MC - this is getting better and better. I have lots of details of several of the Taylor family from Accrington.

This Thomas Taylor was my gt-gt-uncle. I never knew he had lived in the USA! I have his birth details and some early census references, then he "re-appears" in 1911 (by then a widower) living with his deceased sister's husband and children. Now I know what happened in between.

Many thanks for your help.
