I've been searching for somewhile now for the 1861 and 1871 censuses that you were hoping to find. And I'm convinced that the ones I've posted (dotted around above) are the correct ones.

They're by no means straight forward though.

Although Ambrose Mist and Ambrose Angel are clearly two different people, as they're together on the 1841 census. - After that they seem to morph into the same person.

I'd be interested to know what you think.

Hi Phillip, I've looked through this, rather confusing family, over the past coupe of days.

The only child who seems to have been registered is Ambrose Mist b.1877 in Yorkshire. I'm guessing his parents are Ambrose Mist and Harriet Hearsey. (Do you have the certificate? Do you know if this is the case?)

Harriet Hearsey married Ambrose William Angel in 1861.

Harriet Hearsey was born in Easebourne, Sussex - as her son George John was born before she was married, it's possible that he is:

George John Heresey - Jul-Sep 1858 - Vol.2b page 300 - Midhurst

Midhurst covers the district of Easebourne.

This then ties in with the family I found for you on the 1861 census. Living with William A. Angel.

I don't know what happen to William/Ambrose Angel, but the family have moved in with William/Ambrose Mist by 1871, and have taken on his name.

The family in 1871 are living at 50, Brill Row. The children baptised in London in 1870 (Louisa Mary Mist and Thomas Mist) were living at 50 Brile Road.

I fear my explanation of the 1861 and 1871 censuses may have been written down in a confusing way, making it difficult for someone to follow.

Am sending for Ambrose's birth this week. I already have Ambrose William's death cert (1887). It is the mystery of where he and his family were in 1861 and 1871 which has puzzled me. He also seems to have moved around from the North West of England to Sussex and Bucks quite regularly - very strange!

That's Ambrose Mist 1877? Please let us know when the certificate arrives. If my working out is correct his mother's name will be Harriet (formerly) Angel nee Hearsey.

If it's not, it's back to the drawing board.
