I think John William scarpered!!!

I cannot find a death for an acceptable John or John W Englefield, until the following

Deaths Mar 1927 (>99%)

Englefield John W 60 Windsor 2c 727

I do note that Mary Jane was born Feb 1877 (birth certificate shown on that tree I've been looking at)

which means she was only about 17 when Lily was born ................

and that does make it rather unlikely that Mary Jane was also the mother of Matilda, who was born ca 1890.

There are several trees on ancestry that have Lily Goddard, and Mary Jane

One has Lily Goddard Hussey's birth certificate

b. 14 Nov 1894, South Place Wokingham

Mother - Mary Jane Hussey, Charwoman

This tree also says that Lily Hussey married James Hale, Dec quart 1914. London

Mary Jane married John William Englefield, 8 Aug 1897, Parish Church, Hurst, Berkshire

John William apparently died before 1901, because Mary Jane is living with her brother-in-law Frederick Ernest, and is noted as "widow".

She is still living with the brother-in-law in 1911 ........ and there seem to be 2 more children. It is noted that both Frederick and Mary Jane are married

She then marries Charles Coles, 8 Oct 1922, Wokingham.

She died in 1960

This tree also notes a marriage to Unknown Goddard .......... BUT is this the only way to note the name of the putative father????????

A tree on Rootsweb says that Lily Goddard Hussey was born Dec. 1894 in Hurst, Berkshire, daughter of Unknown Goddard and Mary Jane Hussey.

It goes on to say that Mary Jane was born 27 Feb. 1877, Wokingham, daughter of Henry Hussey & Emily Philips.

It shows 3 marriages for Mary Jane but doesn't look right. One of the marriages is to Unknwn Goddard but she couldn't have been married to him if daughter's name was Hussey.

Carrie

Carrie Report 11 Aug 2012 01:31

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Aug 2012 01:28

But if they're both listed as nieces how could one be the aunt of the other?

Janice

Janice Report 11 Aug 2012 01:27

Do you have lily's birth cert? Who were her parents?

Carrie

Carrie Report 11 Aug 2012 01:25

believe that Matilda was actually her Aunt

Janice

Janice Report 11 Aug 2012 01:17

in 1901 Matilda and 'Lilley' are both nieces of Henry and Jane Day. Think it's safe to assume they were sisters.

Do you know if they were just staying or living with them?

Also do you know anything about Lily's adult life?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Aug 2012 01:14

Carrie, you do realize that Lily is a nickname for Lillian? When she gave her name as Lily the authorities could just have assumed that her name was Lillian.
