Mary & Claire - I still live in Newport. The Corporation Hotel became The Corpa before it closed down and was subsequently turned into flats. My grandfather was born in Bilston in 1881. All of the streets off Corporation Road were built and named for the people who came from the Midlands to work at Lysaghts....Walsall, Bilston, Willenhall, Dudley, Telford, Wednesbury...

That gave me goosebumps Jude. x

Prickles...I have a whole (closely related) family in Oz that I never knew existed and I made contact because of FH research. Which of course is the whole beauty of all this. My whole existence is thanks to Mr Lysaght. The steelworks opened in Newport and my mother's parents' families both moved - independently from Birmingham and Wolverhampton- to Newport . My gran and grandad met in Newport. And even more curiously, my husband's paternal family came to Newport from Wolverhampton for the same reason. At one point, my great grandfather and my husband's great grandfather lived virtually next door to each other in 1911 - 69 years before we met (spooky or what!!)

Mary and Claire - in the absence of finding a death in Oz, that 1934 death certificate might be £9.25 well spent :-)

Maybe?

It would be interesting to know who registered the death of William Pitt in 1934.

Prickles...he's either that 1934 death or he emigrated and died in Oz!

There are a few death's for a Willam Pitt without the middle initial "R" (Not that unusual for the middle initial to not be entered) born 1865 between 1911 and 1926 but none registered in Newport.

Thinking outside the box here.............i suppose it is possible that Willam and Bridget seperated and whoever registered his death was not aware of his middle name.

Just a thought.

Mary and Claire

It can not be just a coincident, the names of the family are the same, I
wonder what made them move to New South wales Australia.

See my earlier post

In 1921 the Lysaghts Company established an Australian subsidiary with a brand new galvanising works in Newcastle, New South Wales. Many of the experienced workers form the Orb works in Newport and their families emigrated to form the nucleus of the work force to operate the new mills.
In 1915, The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) having much success in mining moved into steelmaking and opened a works in Newcastle to meet Australia's growing demand for steel products. At the same time, the galvanised iron production capabilities of Lysaght's in England were crippled as a result of World War One. The meagre resources available were mainly directed at the special needs of war and emphasized the isolation of the Australian business and its dependence on British production. The dangerous significance of this situation was realised very early by the firm and arrangements were made at Newcastle to erect a galvanised iron manufacturing facility beside BHP's new steelworks. To mark the coming of an era the Australian organisation was renamed John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd and the head office was transferred from Melbourne to Sydney.

The company built about 4 streets of houses to put their workers in and this area became known as Pommy Town. It was a wonderful community who were like family. Everyone was like Aunts and Uncles. They banded together because they were so far from home and the Australians did not treat them very nice when they first arrived. Muriel Arthur was only seven years old and on the first day they arrived they were pelted with rotten tomatoes and told to go home. The children were bullied at school by other children and some of the teachers. Not a very happy beginning. On that first day my Agnes Florence sat on her trunk in the middle of the dirt track in front of their new home and cried. It was not a very happy beginning to a new life.
In 2011, there was a celebration of the ninetieth anniversary of their arrival at St. Andrew’s Church, Mayfield (shown above).

I can't find a death for William prior to 1926 so I really do wonder whether he went out to Mayfield earlier and that in 1926, the rest of the family joined him. My relatives emigrated to Mayfield in 1921 so it would not be strange if William went out before 1926

Hi Marie Celeste,

If William died between 1911 - 1926 I have not found him. Because the Pitt 's was close knit family it was last thing I thought Bridget would do.

I hope that answers your question.

With regards
Mary & Claire :-)

wonder what made them move to New South wales Australia.

Leaving the rest of the family behind, that must had been hard and did William go before them ?.

It was the last thing I thought they went overseas, when the majority of the close family were left .

Thanks to you for this information

Mary & Claire - who did you think she didn't go overseas.

My guess is that her husband had died before 1926 and her 2 sons went to Australia and didn't want to leave their mum behind.

Destination is Mayfield which is where W Lysaghts opened a steel plant. Many Newport employees moved from Lysaghts Newport to Mayfield around that time.

I wonder if he had already gone out? My great aunt and her family went in 1921
