Sandra,
Do you hold a document dated 13 Oct 1916?
The UK Aliens Entry Books are not searchable by name on Ancestry.... only by date.
How did you come by this info?

There is no one called Ellen Chiapporo or anyone resembling her on the books for 13 Oct 1916.

HO 5/113: 1916 Oct 07 - 1916 Dec 23 (Out Letter Books. Vol. 70)
13 Oct 1916 is found on pages 62-77 of 1012

There is an alphabetical index on the last few pages, listing every letter that was sent. There is no one called Chiappori in this book.

Sorry - we can't seem to find it. Do a straight copy and paste of everything associated with the entry and we can have another go.

We've been looking on Ancestry - it was that site, wasn't it?

As for where Giovanni came from. Make contact with an Anglo-Italian FH group - they may be able to give pointers.

HO 5/113: 1916 Oct 07 - 1916 Dec 23 (Out Letter Books. Vol. 70)

I've looked through the above for letters 16 Oct 1916 - many are faded (they are the carbon copies and the print had worn off!) and couldn't spot your Nan's name.

The letters are primarily of the same format telling people what documents to take to an interview

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 28 Aug 2012 16:52

OK, I've found the book but there are 1082 pages and it is not indexed and isn't searchable so I can't go through all those pages.

There is an index of memos about naturalisations but they are listed in alphabetical order of the recipient not the alien.

They are not in chronological order either.

Well, I can't even find that collection!

Sandra - do you know how to copy and past directly from that screen?

When you say you have the certificate, do you mean you actually have the paper document? Where was it issued and who by?

EDIT: - searching for the collection on Ancestry didn't fetch it up, but Google did!

Sandra,
I have a ww membership and cannot see the entry that you are referring to.
Where is she registered as an alien in 1916? If you require a ww membership, then I presume this must be outside the UK

Could you copy and paste *exactly* what you can see on the page please? It normally says which data base its from

That way we may be able to reproduce the results.

Do you know a Jeremy Chandler? He has a private tree on Ancestry and the following

Photo: Elephant from Sanger's Circus working at Horley
Category: Portrait
Attached To: Giovanni Chiapporri (born 1874)

Story Title: Elephant keeper with Sanger's Circus
Attached To: Giovanni Chiapporri (1874-1951)

Because it is a private tree, no other details are visible
