Sean Report 6 Sep 2012 12:16

Hi all, I wonder if any one can help me please.
My wife's grandmother has given us a name to search for our tree, a Phyllis G Binding, born 1911 in Portsmouth.
I have found the record of her birth, but can not find any reference to her parents, I have found her marriage and her children, but it is her parents we need help with.
Over to you..........................
Cheers Sean

For ref.

Births Dec 1911 Binding Phyllis G Binding Portsmouth 2b 924

You may need to buy the certificate to get the details of her parents.

There is also this birth in the same area

Births Dec 1916 Binding Dorothy M Binding Portsmouth 2b 676

Given that the mmn is also Binding, it is unlikely that a father will be names on the certificate.

As the birth record gives the mother's maiden name as Binding, there probably won't be a father's name on the certificate.

This seems to be the only likely mother if indeed the mother was living in Prtsmouth at the time of the 1911 census.

I would have thought that Lena would also be a possible Reggie as she would have been almost 16 when the child was born? - Not unheard of for an 'unmarried mother' ?

I wondered about that one too Dea. The thing putting me off was that the 1 year old son was born in South Africa so probably the family weren't long back in England.

Dea

Dea Report 6 Sep 2012 13:17

It doesn't take long to 'have a fling' Rootgatherer ;-)

If the child were born towards the end of the December Quarter, it may only just have been conceived at the time the census was taken!

Mind you, the birth cert is essential here as the mother may not even have been in the Portsmouth area before the birth took place - she could well have travelled from anywhere.

MarieCeleste Report 6 Sep 2012 13:17

But who's to say the baby wasn't conceived in SA?

Could have passed morning sickness of as sea sickness!

Really need the cert.

Dea

Dea Report 6 Sep 2012 13:31

George's Army records (Lena's father) show him to be back on British soil on 1st February, 1911. - Plenty of time............... ;-)

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 6 Sep 2012 13:37

I latched on to Maud as she was living away from 'home', although still with a family member, and was not recorded as having an occupation.

BUT......anything any of us posts is speculative...........the birth cert is absolutely essential

Dea

Dea Report 6 Sep 2012 13:53

You will note that Lena had a sister Dorothy and her other sister Natalie had the middle name of Gwendolyn ???.

If the 2 births found are to the same mother (the one we are seeking), then one was Dorothy (1916) and the other (1911) had the middle name of Gwendolyn. - Coincidence ?????

Dea x

Dea

Dea Report 6 Sep 2012 14:06

Yes, Maud does seem a good candidate for those very reasons Reggie but without the cert it will be impossible to know.

Dea i think you should change your board name to "Madame Clouseau"! :-D

Dea

Dea Report 6 Sep 2012 14:20

It's all guesswork though - there are good reasons for suspecting both of these girls but we need to prove it!

It will probably end up being neither of them !
