Hello,

I'm looking for John Booth and/or his wife Sarah on the 1881 census.

Based on the 1871 census when they were living in Worcester John Booth was born about 1838 in Broseley, Shropshire and was a tanner leather merchant, his wife Sarah was born about 1841 in Thurlston Grange, Derbyshire. Their son Henry was also with them. He was born in St. Johns, Worcester in about 1865.

I found Henry Booth on the 1881 census living in Islington, London but I can't find his parents. I couldn't find any evidence that they died before the census either.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Have you got Henry's marriage certificate and, if so, does it describe his Father as deceased?

No I don't have Henry's marriage certificate. He was only 17 at the time of the 1881 census and was living as a boarder.

I don't think the John and Sarah Booth 1881 census above is right. Their birth places and ages are wrong.

That's interesting because James and Sarah Kirby are in Islington for the 1881 census which is where Sarah Booth's son Henry is.

That sounds right but kills a pet theory I have. Oh well.

patchem, I don't know about the original marriage. I haven't looked for that before.

However I just remembered that John Booth was alive on February 14, 1877 as he was a witness to a marriage. So, unless him and Sarah got divorced, the Kirby marriage must be wrong.

Unless he died, and Sarah too, I think they may have moved to London from Worcester sometime between 1871 - 1872. Just a theory though.
