Ann, could you tell me where you got that from? I found a reference ages ago saying he was born in Great Bircham. I think it was somebody's tree in familysearch. However I went through the Great Bircham parish register and didn't find him there.

Thanks for that Joy. I know about the genuki site and also the Norfolk baptism project. Unfortunately it starts at 1813 which is a bit late for me in this case. I think I'll have another look through the genuki site just in case I might have missed something.

familysearch (LDS or whatever) has scanned images of many parish registers in Norfolk. Here's the link:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A//api.familysearch.org/records/collection/1416598/waypoints

I guess you'll have to cut and paste.

I looked through Great Bircham and didn't find him. Maybe I missed him - it's quite a laborious job going through it page by page. Anyway even if I did find him there it wouldn't mean he's THE John Baxter. I need to link him to Bircham Newton.

Does anyone know of a way that I can link a John Baxter born wherever to Bircham Newton?

I know that someone moving to a parish back then had to report to the parish authorities. Are these records stored anywhere?

I got that info off www.familysearch.org - the free Mormon LDS site

Settlement records are in records offices. I have received interesting ones from Suffolk.

Have you tried http://freereg.rootsweb.com/ ?

Yes that's what I found a while ago but I'd forgotten. The submitter for the ancestral file is hgodfrey3390062. I think his name is Howard Godfrey and he lives in California. I can't remember how I worked that out. I'd meant to email him about this but felt a little bit uncomfortable. The only way I've found to contact him is through his work website.

Anyway this is the page for 1779 (which hgodfey has as John's birth) for the Great Bircham parish register and there's no John Baxter.

Joy,

I think I'll have to get hold of the settlement records if I can.

I have tried freeREG and there are several John Baxters born about the right time all over Norfolk but I've no way of knowing which is the right one.

Just to avoid confusion my reply above is not to Joy but the post before from Ann.

I thought hgodfey worked for the Mormon Church

Ann,

Maybe he does work for them. I don't know why I thought he was a photographer. I might have got that wrong. Anyway I've just found a couple of email addresses for him so I might contact him. Although, like I said, I didn't find a reference to John Baxter in Great Bircham.

I think I'll have to go for the settlement records or some other parish records that record the arrival of newcomers to the parish.
