Eringobragh1916 Report 30 Sep 2012 15:35

Kathyrn....

I have found this relative to Catherine Nolan (Lisnaboll)...

In 1893 Catherine Nolan was a Tenant Farmer on land of Dr. Carroll (Landlord) she had her rent reduced following a Judicial Rents Review (along with many others)..

Poor Law Valuation of Land....£38.5.0 (per annum)
Former Rent....£47.00
Judicial Rev.Rent...£ £35.15

So it appears that Catherine was the Tenant as far back as 1893....which brings into question whether the 1901 Census showing her to be married is correct...or was the Catherine (1893) a mother/mother-in-law to Catherine 1901..??

Lisnaboll was a Townland of only 95 acres and the only Nolan who appears to have been listed there going back aways was a William Nolan....G.V 1863.

Hi Marie, this is getting really interesting now. Not sure if you saw my last message about sending off for William's birth cert. But in it I said I would send off and hopefully we can get somewhere once that comes back. At least we'll have date to work off if indeed the date of birth is correct as I have found in the past that sometimes the dates even on the certificates aren't correct.

Marie you do really find some interesting stuff about people. I will question my colleague tomorrow to check on John, Catherine's husband to see if he can shed any light on what happened to him ie he either died or left the family home for what ever reason.

Thank you again for your continued help and information.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Sorry Eringobragh1916, I didn't look to see who'd sent me the last message and assumed it was Marie. Apoligies for that but thank you so much for your time and help in my quest.

Kind regards

Hi all, have spoken to my colleague today and I really hope we haven't been barking up the wrong tree with the Nolan family. He is going to try and get me some more dates etc but in the meantime he said that Bridget Nolan was definitely born on 17 February 1880. He said the parish is Elphin, I've not come across this name before but I believe it is still in Roscommon. I've had a look for her but cannot find her unless it comes under another name. He said she died in 1973, she never married.

As ever, any help would be greatly appreciated. I think he is going to write to the church to try and get other dates for the family and in particular William.

Am sorry if I have wasted everyones time and efforts.

Oh by the way my colleague said that the husband, John, was in a lunatic asylum in Ballinsloe, County Galway but he is not sure when, obviously he wasn't around in the 1901 Irish Census and then his wife was given as a widow in the 1911 Irish Census.

Kind regards

Kathryn...
.No you are not "barking up the wrong tree"..your colleague is quite correct...what he is probably referring to is the RC Parish of Elphin and Creeve...which is different to the Civil Parish..The counties were/are broken down into varying Civil parishes and Ecclesiastical parishes..sounds complicated but its only a case of knowing where the boundries of specific parishes were and if they even went into other Counties...certainly ecclesiastical ones did....!!
Elphin RC Diocese:
It comprises parts of the counties of Galway and Sligo, and the greater part of Roscommon,
Elphin per se is a Townland and also a Civil Parish on the road from Roscommon to Boyle

This is the closest I can find for Bridget:

Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958
Name: Bridget Nolan
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1880
Registration district: Mullingar
Birth Country: Ireland
Volume: 3
Page: 274
FHL Film Number: 101057

Not too sure about it - Mullingar is about 50 miles from Elphin and if she was born February it would be a very late registration.

Kathryn.....

The Ballinasloe Asylum was in Townparks (East Galway) the names are listed only by initials eg JN but it also gives age and occup.plus place of birth.....there were at one time in excess of 1000 residents so it is not an easy task to plough through all to see if John shows up...!! Your colleague obviously knows something !!

Who is Bridget...????

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 1 Oct 2012 20:43

Hi all, thank you once again for all your help. Hopefully my colleague can give some more leads very soon. Bridget was the daughter of John and the sister of William who I initially was enquiring about who apparently went off to Australia. Is there a list of inmates so to speak of the Asylum so I could start looking?

Thanks everyone for your continued time, help and support.

Kind regards

Eringobragh1916 Report 2 Oct 2012 08:52

Kathryn...The only way to look for him is to check through the 1901 Census for Townparks Ballinasloe Co Galway..you would need to put in only initials and bring up the actual image rather than the index....
There are a number of JN's for birth Co Roscommon but ..you dont know if John was actually born Co Roscommon so you would have to look at all the others..!!
Its not something that would definitely prove it was the John Nolan you were looking for...you would then need to cross ref. for a Death between 1901-1911 registered Ballinasloe for a John Nolan ..you would also neeed to check out 1911 to see if a JN who was on 1901 is still there 1911.

I would check for a Death first...!
Have only found 1 that would fit age....

name: John Nolan
registration district: Ballinasloe
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1906
estimated birth year: 1841 age (at death): 65

Hello, thank you so much for this further information. I will have a scroll through in the meantime and wait and see what my colleague comes up with, if he can provide any dates or places etc. Have not long been in from work and once again I am not getting a message via my email that someone has posted a reply.

If anything else comes up I will continue on this thread.

Kind regards

Hello, I now have William' date of birth, actually there are two:-

Civil Birth Record shows

William Nolan
Date of birth 7 February 1881
Date of baptism 15 March 1881
Adresss Lisnaboll
Parish/District Ballinameen
County Roscommon, Ireland
Father John Nolan
Mother Catherine Nolan

Church Baptism Record

William Nolan
Date of birth 12 February 1881
Date of baptism 13 February 1881
Address Skea/Skeagh
Parish/District Elphin
County Roscommon, Ireland

Mother Catherine Nolan
Father John Nolan

Now William shows in the 1901 Irish Census but he is not in the 1911 Census.

My colleague knows he went to Australia. We are not sure when or now he got there. Not sure if there were ships sailing from Ireland or he would have had to come to England to sail.

Not sure if anyone could please find out for me and if now we have his dates of birth (these two records are definitely one in the same person) and when he died but of course it is not known which part of Australia he went to.

Any help as ever would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Kathryn
