Just want to say a big thank you to those who have taken the time to research things for and although I'm still not certain whereElizabeth Skinner was born(could be Sowerby) quite a few other things have come to light.
Thanks again

Ann Jane Skinner - Child of William Skinner & Elizabeth

Occupation: Mariner
Baptised by: J. Pulford Curate

with the inconsistencies between the 2 marriages I wonder if they were actually 2 different Ann Janes especially with different fathers named

edit - just realised Ann was Lewis on the 1851 census

You are all working hard!
I have both marriage certs (Lewis & Phillips) for my 2x gt grandmother Ann Jane Skinner . What threw me was that when she married David Lewis she was a spinster And her father was Joseph Skinner and when she married George Phillips (my 2x gt grandfather ) she was still a spinster and her father was William. Maybe this was because she was a minor when she first married and married without her parents consent, who knows. Both husbands where in the Royal artillery , both stationed at Birchfield Barracks in 1851 and Lewis' father was the Barrack sergeant! Whatever happened to Lewis?!

Hi lancashireAnn, this gets more confusing! I have seen Nicholas & Eliza Grundy on the 1851 census and looking again at the 1871 it does look more like Grumley. Maybe the next step is to look at the OPC site for the marriage details although I' m not sure where that will get me. Anyone any other ideas?? :-( I also have problems on the Skinner side, but that's another story ....
Thanks again everyone,
Chris

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 7 Nov 2012 15:09

there was an Eliza Garnett married a Nicholas Grumley in 1836

Nicholas Grundy on 1851 census is registered as Nicholas Grumley

so as Elizabeth Skinner was a widow on her marriage to William Skinner was her previous married name Garnett rather than Garner?
