sorry I didn't get back to you straight away to be honest i thought it would be a while before i heard anything.
Well what can I say WOW your all marvellous, you have achieved in a matter of minutes what iv'e been scratching around with for years and never got anywhere with i cant thank you enough.
I'll try and answer your questions if i can;
no i don't have Charles and Eliza's marriage cert and the 1877 date was only a guess.
I do have birth certs for Charles (jnr) and Gilbert, they both list Charles Griffiths as their father and Eliza Griffiths formerly Fear as their mother, it also says that the informant was Eliza and she only made her mark so she probably couldn't read or write. The birth dates were for Charles:- 11-1-1879, and Gilbert:- 3-2-1880, both born at Corn st Shepton Mallet.
I am no longer a member of Ancestry I let it laps a couple of years ago

Mel, to be honest, I'm not too sure about that 1871 either.

I'm dubious about the 1881, too with a birth year of 1869 for Alfred. All the other records seem to be consistent (ish) with his age. Wonder if that was another child?

Will see if I can find Charles in 1871.

Have just realized that the census I put up for 1871 it is Alfred J and not H. ????? This is rather confusing is'nt it? :-S

I am going to have a look for Eliza Wright on previous census.

Mel, I've searched and can't see a likely marriage. The 1911 says 34 years wed which would b c1877 but the 1881 census has Gilbert b 1880 as "wife's son".

I'm guessing they might not have troubled the vicar, as they say! The 34 years might just be how long they'd been together.

By the way I have been looking for the marriage. Have any of you found it yet? Charles Griffiths and Elizabeth Fear????? or Eliza

So perhaps he was Eliza'a son and his birth year is 1869.

According to his service records he says he was born Liverpool!!
