On Ancestry, someone has corrected William Magee to William Gee on the 1851 census (posted by Quinsgran in OP)

Joseph William Gee, born 1870, may not be the son of a Whitfield at all. William Gee was Joseph Whitfield's stepson, so could have married anyone.
