Hi Chris - Elizabeth Kate is on the 1901 census.
Can I ask where you found the baptism record? We thought that James was at one stage a policeman, but it didn't seem to tie in with other things we were finding
Thanks

Thanks Shirley, I had the census but not the marriage. Not sure why I'd missed that because I knew her married name was Russell :-S
Thanks Mel. I'm wondering if the witness at the wedding wasn't the publican Amos but his son Amos who was living at the same address and was about the same age as Rose & James

Hi Reggie, hadn't thought of looking at the witnesses
Reggie & Shirley - the Ellen you've both found is the daughter of an Emily Checksfield who married James Julian Jarvis and they lived in High Street Tenterden (I think he was a green grocer). I've researched all of this side late one night because I thought I'd found my Rose, but it doesn't look like that Ellen was ever married so I've ruled her put
Dea - you've replied while I've been slowly typing! And you've come up with some brand new leads for me. Thank you so much. I didn't know I could search the census on address. I've been googling anchor terrace but it no longer exists! Also how did you find out that the witness was the local publican? I obviously have a lot to learn
Thank you everyone for all of your help so far. I feel I'm a little closer in finding her. Right I'm off to look at the 1891 census :-D

Wow - what an amazing response and so quickly!
Hopefully I can reply to everyone.
Hi Shirley, it's a usefulness tip about the lack of penalties for not registering before 1875. I have looked on City Ark for a baptism, but only at the church that Rose & James got married at. It's a source I'd forgotten about so I need to go back there. I don't know about any siblings. You have found the correct entry for her in the 1901 census and the census record for Jim is also right. The entry for Edith is probably correct as Rose & the children were in and out of the workhouse a lot and I'm pretty sure that the family sadly were split up while the children were young.
Hi Dea, from the parish record it says 14th May 1892 James Ruck, 25 years, bachelor, labourer, living in Anchor Terrace, father James Ruck (deceased) who was also a labourer Rose Ellen Jarvis, 23 years, spinster, no occupation, also living in Anchor Terrace, father George Jarvis (deceased) who was also a labourer. It was witnessed by Amos E Parris and what looks like E Russell or could be Bussell
Hi PricklyHolly, I hadn't found that census entry but they are definitely Rose's children

I have to go out just now but here is a 'little something' to work on:........
The address on marriage entry was Anchor terrace for both.
There are only 3 houses on Anchor Terrace and this was one of them - Could the name to Ruck ???
1891 Census transcription details for: 1, Anchor Terrace, Strood, Rochester
National Archive Reference: RG number RG12 Piece: 654 Folio: 36 Page: 65 Reg. District: Strood Sub District: Strood Parish: Strood Enum. District: 15 Ecclesiastical District: St Nicholas City/Municipal Borough: Rochester Address: 1, Anchor Terrace, Strood, Rochester County: Kent Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation , Disability Where Born RUCH, Alfred Head Married M 58 1833 Farm Labourer Strood, Kent RUCH, Elizabeth Wife Married F 58 1833 East Malling, Kent
The witnesses were Amos E Parris who was the local Publican at the Robin Hood Inn and the other was E Russell ??
Both father's were deceased (labourers) - i.e. James Ruck and George Jarvis.
Will be back later..........
Dea x
P.S. - Groom was a labourer aged 25, batchelor and bride was 23 and a spinster.

Who witnessed the marriage?
