Hi again, stillsearching for Hannah Pardington(Pittaway)
Have looked at 1841 census and there are two Hannah Pittaways
1. born 1791 Kings Norton living with children William Pittaway age 25 and Charlotte age 13
2. born 1796 Shipston on Stour living with Richard Pittaway age 55 and children Mary, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Richard and Harriet
On 1851 census
1. born 1791 Hannah age 60 living with William Pittaway age 36 and Richard Pittaway age 26, I assume again are her children
2. born 1796 Hannah age 55, head of family living with Elizabeth age 19, Sarah age 17, Richard age 14 and Lucy Pitaway age 2 who is actually Hannahs grand daughter

Both Hannahs appear to have married a Richard Pittaway, date 25.1.1813 at Shipston. I believe Hannah number 2 is the one I am looking for because of the names of children but how do I discount Hannah 1?

have looked at tree on Ancestry but there are no records to back up the marriage of Richard and Hannah or their children. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly, from your information it looks like this was the second marriage of Richard. Have seen a tree on Ancestry that has Hannah Pardington linked to Richard so will look at this
Once again many thanks Jo

Now have birth certificate for Lucy Ann Elizabeth Pittway, born 9th May1848 Shipston, birth registered 16th June 1848. No father is named, mother as Esther Pittway who signed with a cross. Confirms that Esther Pittway was her mother. Looking back at previous research it looked like parents of Esther were Richard Pittway/Pittaway and Hannah. Any help please as to how I can confirm this and also surname of Hannah. Thanks for any help

Thank you so much for all your work, don`t know how you do it, my brain feels quite scrambled at the moment! Will send for birth certificate as suggested. Now can see why others gave up in researching Lucy Gardner. Once again many thanks, will post when I get certificate Jo

I have now looked for the niece 'Prudence'.

FamilySearch site shows the following baptism:

Prudence Pitway, "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975"
Name: Prudence Pitway
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 14 Nov 1852
Christening Place: Shipston, Worcester, England

Mother's Name: Elizabeth Pitway (no father mentioned)

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00932-8
System Origin: England-EASy
GS Film number: 367957
Reference ID: P113 No 902

So, Prudence is the daughter of Esther's younger sister Elizabeth, therefore neice to William and Esther.

This could be Hannah and Richard from 1841

Richard Pittaway 55
Hannah Pittaway 45
Mary Pittaway 18
John Pittaway 13
Elizabeth Pittaway 10
Sarah Pittaway 8
Richard Pittaway 4
Harriet Pittaway 4 Mo

There is a possible death for Richard in 1843

Yes Jo,

I haven't looked in detail at Prudence but working from Andy's 1871 and the marriage he found then Esther was named Pitway/Pittaway and they married some years after Lucy was born so she would have been Lucy Pitway/Pittaway at birth.

I posted her birth registration detains in 1848 above. - If you buy the cert it will give her parents but I doubt if a father will be mentioned.

I have posted the 1851 which shows Lucy as the daughter of Hannah but this is VERY doubtful, given her age.

Births Jun 1848 (>99%)
Pittway Lucy Ann Elizabeth Shipston on S 11 414

I would guess that Esther is Hannah's daughter but at the time of 1841 census she is working away from home (strangely, for a family called Gardner, which may or may not be connected to William - I think it probably is).

When Esther married, Lucy took on the name Gardner.

Just as further info, there are two lots of details showing Lucy's baptism - they seem to be having difficulty transcribing her second middle name:

Lucy Elizabeth Bain Pitway

England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

christening: 13 August 1848 Shipston upon Stour, Worcester, England
residence: England

parents:Esther Pitway (no father mentioned)

Lucy Elizabeth Pam Pitway

England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

christening: 13 August 1848 SHIPSTON-ON-STOUR,WORCESTER,ENGLAND

parents:Esther Pitway (no father mentioned)

There is this baptism for Esther which shows her parents as Hannah and Richard so this proves that Hannah 'did' have a daughter called Esther, even though we have not found them together on any census:

Esther Pitway, "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975"
Name: Esther Pitway
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 24 Apr 1833
Christening Place: SHIPSTON-ON-STOUR,WORCESTER,ENGLAND

Father's Name: Richard Pitway
Mother's Name: Hannah

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C04386-1
System Origin: England-ODM
GS Film number: 559239
Reference ID:

It all looks to be a 'fit' ??

Do ask again if there is anything not quite clear.

Dea x

Andrew Report 20 Jun 2013 13:43

There is also Esther Pittaway age 12 (getting younger all the time) as a servant in 1841 census.

This date of birth would make more sense than the c1835 as in the 1861 census originally posted as she would have been only 15 when married.

Trying to find Esther in earlier census and found this. Would explain why she had left Lucy, possible with grandparent?

Hi Dea, am trying to get my head around this, are we assuming that Prudence Pittaway age 8 on 1861 census noted as niece of head is is Esthers niece and therefore he maiden name was Pittaway which then links in with marriage that Andy found for 1852 and the birth that you found for 1848? On 1851 census about Lucy Pitway, do you think that Hannah could have been her grandma/auntie because of her aged 55? Sorry if I appear to be confusing matters. Jo

This 'could' be Esther on 1841 and it seems she is working as a servant in a 'Gardner' Household - I wonder if there is some connection here?

Thanks to all, going by the possible marriage of William and Esther in 1852, it seems that Lucy was born before they got married? Jo
