It's a pity the adopted son's name isn't Rumble! And the birthplace is different. Anyway, we've already got Charles Wood with first wife in 1891.

Should have looked there first, I suppose, but have just found a tree on Ancestry which says Charlotte and Frances were sisters. Parents John Hall and Ellen Sellar Parsons.
No verification, though, and no mention of their husbands and children.

But therefore a likely Wood/Roumble/Rumble link - though maybe not the right ones!

Another thing I was just thinking I remember hearing somewhere that the person named in the father section wasn't always the father ie could have been an older brother or other family member that raised him - but then again with the same name that might not work either.

Back to the drawing board me thinks. :-D

The name Roumble is a puzzle in itself.

On Ancestry, there are only two census records for that surname, one in 1851 in Fareham, and one in 1891 in London, and neither mentions a Charles.

As far as Charles Henry is concerned, the name Roumble only appears in 1895 at his marriage, in 1904 at Rose's birth, and at Charles's probate.

The 1891 census record was posted on page 1 by AnnCardiff. In earlier and later census that family's name is spelled Rumbol

As the name seems pretty fluid, this looks like Charles Henry's death:

There is no likely record of a birth in Middlesex 1869-1874 for a Charles with a name anything like Roumble, so perhaps he was born Wood.

But don't know why the occasional change to Roumble/Rumble, in amongst the various Wood records! It's not as if he'd changed, and then stuck with the new name.

This could be his father Charles's death, perhaps:

OKay I have a concern about using the surname Wood in that Charles Henry is listed under Roumble in probate, why would this be the case if the surname is Wood or roumblewood?

Very true Argyll Ann, but then again maybe they dropped the roumble for some reason or wood was added for some reason. This is where I wish we could pay less for an e-mail with only the details from the registry office it's not like we actually need the certificates just the information on them. :-(

Charles that was married to Hannah his middle name was Henry. That may make a difference when searching for him and on his marriage entry his father is simple listed at Charles Roumble.

Rose Florence's birth is the only Roumblewood record of any sort on the whole of FreeBMD - so doesn't look as if it's a real name!

Maybe the birth cert would show something different - likely it's two words (Roumble Wood - as on her marriage cert) mistranscribed.
Pity you can't buy the cert!

Andrew - I already have the same marriage thanks, the death could be it if she's continued using her maiden name. If the name was actually Roumblewood then the Wood family you have found may in fact them so thanks for that.

Ann - I came across that family but as no James or Maurice appear with them I discounted them.

Reggie - Unfortunately the family I'm doing this for don't want me to buy certificates. I did find the same death record as you however, the Claptons you found are the right family but I'm fine on them, he was infact married twice had a load of kids and even spent some time in Goal - a real east ender he was. Like I mentioned above with Andrew if the surname was in fact Roumblewood then we could be onto something with the Wood surname.

Argllgran and Safc - thanks maybe there's something with a name change.
