New question added! Please go to last post!
A week or so ago I posted about William Fox/Mead - which proved to be a red herring so I deleted the post. I now have three pertinent certificates so reposting.
So here goes....
George Mead was my husband's gg-grandfather born Plympton Devon aorund 1835 (it varies from 1832 to 1835 in censuses).
1861 census
Name: George Maids [George Mead] Age: 26 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Maids Gender: Male Where born: Plympton St Mary, Devon, England Civil Parish: Plympton St Maurice County/Island: Devon Country: England Street Address: 30 Fore Street Plymtpon Occupation: Labourer Condition as to marriage: Married Registration District: Plympton St Mary Sub-registration District: Plympton ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Neighbors: View others on page Household Schedule Number: 35 Piece: 1431 Folio: 15 Page Number: 6 Household Members: Name Age George Maids 26 Mary Ann Maids 24 Willm Fox 4 - stepson John Maids 1 Months - son
So I searched for a marriage for George Mead to a Mary Ann and the only one that came up was in Chard in Q1 1861.
So this is the first certificate.....the George marrying Mary Ann Boon is a labourer, son of John also a labourer. MY George was the son of John (so far so good) but John was a carpenter/wheelwright. And then this George was 20 giving a year of birth as 1840/41 - much younger than George. Moreover, Mary Ann Boon was only 18...
The second certificate I purchased was that of my husbands g-grandfather James born just before the 1871 census. Father is George Mead and address is 8 Cambridge Lane East, Plymouth, the same as just weeks later in the census. Mother is Mary Ann Mead formerly Fox.
Finally, the birth certificate of stepson William Fox shows him to have been born 15 November 1856 in the Union Workhouse Plympton St Mary to Mary Ann Fox - no father named.
So in 1861, Mary Ann is living as George's wife.
I cannot find a marriage - I suspect they didn't marry at all. BUT CAN ANYONE FIND SOMETHING I AM MISSING?
So 1871 (I think the enumerator got their birthplaces transposed-and the ages are both wrong)
Name: George Mead Age: 39 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Mead Gender: Male Where born: Yealmpton, Devon, England Civil Parish: St Andrew Ecclesiastical parish: Christchurch Town: Plymouth County/Island: Devon Country: England Registration District: Plymouth Sub-registration District: St Andrew ED, institution, or vessel: 10 Household Schedule Number: 231 Piece: 2119 Folio: 46 Page Number: 36 Household Members: Name Age George Mead 39 Mary Ann Mead 39 William Mead 14 John Mead 10 George Mead 7 Richard Mead 5 James Mead 2 Months
William is now shown as a Mead and as a son. And that is the last I have found of him for sure - either as Mead or Fox. And they are both very common West Country names. In this census he is shown as a drover.
SO CAN ANYONE FIND ANYTHING?
I'm fully expecting resounding "noes all round"!!!!!!!!!

Ooh Chris - thanks - these are great! Doesn't solve my search for their marriage or where William went but I didn't have these so it's great!!!!!
As was the norm it's a block booking :-) I wonder why William wasn't christened at same time?

Jude, as William was born in the workhouse infirmary it could be that he was already christened there - I have a couple of children in my tree born and christened in the workhouses.

Slightly different tack...George's son Richard had a son called George Henry Mead born 1886 in Tregony Cornwall (which came under Redruth/Cambourne). I have him up to 1901.
I then have an army record in 1917 which I believe is him - not sure though - which shows him to have married in 1905 and to have a daughter Royal Annie Mead born in 1908.
I can find Mary Ann Moss Mead (known as Annie) and daughter Royal in 1911 but not George Henry. I have then found an emigration record to Canada in 1924 for what I think is same guy, states married but wife nor child with him. Royal Annie marries in 1932 in Truro and dies in 1998 in Redruth area.
Before I order that marriage certificate to check father's details - any thoughts anyone? And can anyone find him 1911?

George Henry Mead married 8/4/1905 of 2,St Clements Cottage On his Army papers he was also at 2, St Clements Cottage and he was an Engineer.
This George henry was in Seccondee Ghana as a Fitter/Engineer returns 23/1/1912 went 12/6/1912,he seems to have been there and back on very many occasions the last I found coming back was 6/7/1924 and maybe the 1st in 1902!!
George H Mead to Ghana Africa 2/6/1920 an Engineer Returned from Africa 4/9/1922 G H Mead an Engineer address 2,St Clements Cottage Truro.
Could this George Henry be a different on as there were two born @ same time One in Truro area and one in Falmouth.
Strange his wife and daughter wasn't at this address in 1911. Mary Ann M Mead born @1885 died 1935.

Mary thanks
"My" George Henry is almost certainly this one
Name: George Henry Mead Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1885 Registration District: Truro Inferred County: Cornwall Volume: 5c Page: 127
So I have revised his year of birth to 1885!
The other one - registered Redruth is this one
Births Sep 1886 (>99%)
Mead George Henry Redruth 5c 222 Scan available - click to view
but this is why he doesn't feature in censuses
Deaths Mar 1887 (>99%) Mead George Henry 0 Redruth 5c 196
Am going to have to have a play with this....his occupation didn't sit well with me!

Jude, what is making you doubt the occupation? - if the military record you've found is correct then the occupation engineer or fitter would would agree with it..

In 1901 - albeit only 15 - he is an agricultural labourer like his father and his grandfather.......it seems a bit of a jump. But of course if Mary is correct and he joined the military in 1902, then it is possible he became an engineer then.
It's just infuriating that I can't find him in 1911! I suppose though that he could have been overseas.
Chris - thanks - that's definitely him - Louisa's maiden name was Beard.

Jude, he didn't join the military in 1902, that is the first year Mary found him travelling. He joined in 1916 active from 1917 according to the military record, and he was already a fitter. It clearly states he has never been in military before. Names the wife and child on his military record - don't know if you can access the record but there are 2, 1 has only 4 pages but the other has over 20.

Yes I have looked at them (both) though not in full....I have found him travelling out to Secccondee in December 1910 :-)
It is almost inconceivable that this is not him. He can't have had a very happy marriage - he was never at home ;-) or perhaps that is why the marriage lasted so long! She obviously didn't divorce or remarry!!
I might just invest in the marriage certificate of both him and Royal Annie!

The soldier is him...hidden deep inside the 26 pages was place of birth Tregony Cornwall
Dea...this is wife Mary Ann Moss Mead in 1911 with daughter Royal
Name: Annie Mead Age in 1911: 26 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1885 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Female Birth Place: St Truro Civil Parish: Illogan County/Island: Cornwall Country: England Street Address: No 5 East Hill, Tuckingmill, Camborne Marital Status: Married Registration District: Redruth Registration District Number: 299 Sub-registration District: Illogan ED, institution, or vessel: 5 Household Schedule Number: 50 Piece: 13989 Household Members: Name Age Annie Mead 26 Royal Mead 5 Mary Annie Trevton 70
She also appears (as Annie Penrose married) at her parent's house but I suspect this was a red herring. Her mother's maiden name was Trevarton and I think Mary Annie Trevton visitor is actually her grandmother.
Like I say Mead is like a West Country Smith or Jones lol
:-D :-D
