I wondered how Phyllis was a niece on the 1911 census
This is the marriage of her aunt and uncle.
Name: Albert Edward Dixon Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1887 Registration District: Biggleswade Inferred County: Bedfordshire Volume Number: 3b Page Number: 437 Records on Page: Name Selina Binstead
This is them on the 1891 census before they moved up to Sheffield
Name: Albert E Dixon Age: 27 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Selina Dixon Gender: Male Where born: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Civil Parish: Arlesey Ecclesiastical parish: Arlesey Town: Arlesey County/Island: Bedfordshire Country: England Registration District: Biggleswade Sub-registration District: Biggleswade ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 1256 Folio: 14 Page Number: 22 Household Members: Name Age Albert E Dixon 27 Selina Dixon 22 Charlotte A Dixon 3 I then wondered if Selina had a sister who could have married an Ackrill, I found this wedding
Name: ACKRILL, William Registration district: Hitchin County: Hertfordshire Year of registration: 1885 Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912 Volume no: 3A Page no: 605 Marriage Finder: William Ackrill married one of the following people:
BANKS, Mary Ann BINSTEAD, Annie BARBER, George Augustus
1871 census shows that Selina did have a sister Anne Name: Selina Binstead Age: 5 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: James Binstead Mother's Name: Charlotte Binstead Gender: Female Where born: Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England Civil Parish: Hitchin Town: Hitchin County/Island: Hertfordshire Country: England Registration District: Hitchin Sub-registration District: Hitchin ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Household Schedule Number: 190 Piece: 1368 Folio: 43 Page Number: 36 Household Members: Name Age James Binstead 45 Charlotte Binstead 39 Harriot Binstead 11 Anne Binstead 7 Selina Binstead 5 James Binstead 1 Month
Here is Selina's sister Annie who has also moved up to Yorkshire

Name: ACKRILL, William Registration district: Sheffield County: Yorkshire Year of registration: 1905 Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar Age at death: 50 Volume no: 9C Page no: 392
I can’t see her presumed mother Annie on the 1911 census, I wondered if she had remarried because she was 10 years younger than her husband. I found this marriage, but of course it may not be her and it is after the census Civil Registration event: Marriage
Print Close Name: ACKRILL, Annie Registration district: Sheffield County: Yorkshire Year of registration: 1911 Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912 Volume no: 9C Page no: 1135 Marriage Finder: Annie Ackrill married one of the following people:
OATES, Walter RICHMOND, William J GOSNEY, Martha
All of this is conjecture of course, you need the marriage certificate of your grandparents which will give her fathers name so you can see if it does match up

As you're new poster, do you know where to get certificates from?
Although you can get them from the issuing Register Office, the only online site you should use is
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
Each certificate will cost £9.25 using a debit or credit card and includes 2nd class P&P. Use the references provided on the thread which were orriginally found on the GRO indexes.
If you purchase from Sheffield Regiter Office, they have a different system of numbering and might cost a bit more. Year, quarter and name should suffice to help them track down the correct certificate

Thank you very much. The birth was correct, so you are saying that it as the first census you provided. That she wasn't living with her parents as it states she was a niece. So as advised I need get copies of either birth or marriage certificate to ascertain parents . Matt

This would be your grandfathers death
Name: BENTON, John Richard Registration district: Sheffield County: Yorkshire Year of registration: 1996 Month of registration: August Date of birth: 25 March 1902 District no: 0481G Reg no: G52A Ent no: 147 DOR: 896

Is this the death of your grand mother? if it is it gives her date of birth
Name: BENTON, Phyllis Registration district: Sheffield County: Yorkshire Year of registration: 1994 Month of registration: November Date of birth: 30 August 1902 District no: 0481H Reg no: H59A Ent no: 029 DOR: 1194
In that case the birth registration would be the first one found
Name: Phyllis Ackrill Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1902 Registration District: Sheffield Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding Volume: 9c Page: 683
Assuming the date of birth on the burial was correct, they had 6 weeks to register the birth, so that could take it into the Oct-Dec period of 1902

Hi Matt, as you've seen from the census there are two very strong contenders and it would be very easy to follow the wrong branch.
To be sure of the right line you need Phyllis' marriage certificate to see who it names as her father. The details are posted above. You can order a copy from GRO for £9.25 http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

In that case you will need to buy their marriage certificate so you can know for certain who the fathers are before you go backwards
The only way not to buy it would be to visit the records office in Sheffield and to look through the church records on micro film for June to Sept 1930 assuming you could guess which church it was

The only Sheffield marriage I can see is the one I posted. If that is the correct marriage then buying that certificate will give her fathers name,so he would know which 1911 family is the correct one
