"So Si....I think your first purchase needs to be the marriage certificate between George and Jane McSweeney which may show his father?"

Indeed. That's the first to do. I've held back because of mismatch between a previous attempt (by someone else) who came up with McAuley as her maiden name. After digging around myself, I became convinced that it was McSweeney, but that McAuley was relevant to her, and suspected a prior marriage. Now I know that this is pretty much likely to be our gal, I'll be sending off for a record of their nuptials.

Thanks again to Jude, Flip and Christine. You really have been stars, and I would have spent months figuring this lot out by myself, if, indeed, I'd ever managed it.

I'll let everyone know what the Greek Orthodox Church in Liverpool comes up with (fingers crossed!).

Thanks,
Si

Si - Flip - Ancestry for me.

Christina - brilliant - I wasn't happy with the Florence Lewis in West Derby because I knew there was a christening that matched that wasn't George and Jane.

And still - the marriage cert is the best one to start off with because if anything shows his father it will br this.

That could fit Christina, as the 2 Florence Lewis births in 1880 are both "allocated" to parents which are not Jane and George according to their christenings.

This may be Florence's birth reg. Would fit with her being 11 months old on the 1881 census.......

Hi, the records I found for her marriage to Mr Hayes and Mr McSweeney were from ancestry, not sure where Jude's records were from though as I thing she also has a FMP subscription.

Incidently, I found 2 births in Co Tyrone for Jane McAuley with fathers name Patrick in 1856, on rootsireland.ie but you need credits to actually look at the record.

The only way to get back from George is to get his marriage cert as Jude says, even then his anglisised name may not match his birth name. I can't see a naturalisation record for him on the national archives site under George Lewis.

Good grief!

Only just logged in today, having found a dozen or more emails from GR in my inbox. Can I just say: thank you *very much indeed* to everyone who's added to this thread since my last post yesterday. You've enhanced my knowledge of my wife's ancestry brilliantly, and I've got some following up to do!

Can I ask everyone - what sites did you use to find the records you have, particularly the ones for Jane? They confirm my suspicion that the marriage to George wasn't her first, but it's interesting about Jane's children, certainly.

I'm still waiting impatiently to hear back from Father Kassinos at the Liverpool Greek Orthodox Church, as that might start to unlock information about George, but now you've opened up the Irish heritage, there's more than enough to occupy me there for ages!

Thanks everyone, and I'll be ordering various certificates next week, I think.
:-)

Familysearch has the "intended" marriage of Jane McSweeney and George Lewis, dated 10/4/1879 at St Aiden's which I believe is in Walton. Although his age is about 10 years out.

Unfortunately lanopc does not have that church's records online.

Sorry, it should be Kirkdale, not Walton, as posted from Lancashirebmd

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 1 Sep 2013 08:50

there's another child in Ireland
Name: Rossana Catherine Mcsweeny
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 26 Dec 1877
Birth Place: Lifford, Donegal, Ireland
Father's Name: John Mcsweeny
Mother's Name: Jane Mcauley Mcsweeny
FHL Film Number: 255998

which might explain why Eugene is missing in 1881.

And this could be him dying

Name: John M'Sweany
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1878
Death Age: 36
Registration District: Strabane
Death Country: Ireland
Volume: 2
Page: 272
FHL Film Number: 101589

None of which helps in your search for George though :-(

Jude, I think the earlier census has her born c1857 so slightly older than on her 1898 marriage. That looks good for Eugene though, same area as the possible marriage.

ADDED: Just seen you've got the christening as well :-D

Florence was 11 months old in 1881 so born around April 1880. So IF the June 1879 marriage is correct then she could quite conceivably (please excuse the pun) be George's. The only GRO that matches a West Derby birth is a September 1880 one.

How sure are you that the 1879 marriage in St Aiden is your George? George Lewis is not exactly an uncommon name and as we know that the 1898 marriage to Patrick Hayes IS her, and she gives her father as Patrick McCauley (deceased) soldier then it would mean that Jane McCauley would have to have married a McSweeney when she was VERY young (the 1898 marriage shows her to have been born in 1859). So if Flip's entry above is correct then she was only 16 (unless of course she fibbed in 1898)

The marriage I referred to last night just in case it helps:

Jane Lewis (Widow)
Birth Year:abt 1859
Age:39

Marriage Date:7 Jun 1898
Parish:Kirkdale, St Paul

Spouse's Name:Patrick Hayes (widower, 44, Marine fireman)
Father's Name:Patrick McAuley (deceased, soldier)
Spouse Father's Name:Jeremiah Hayes (deceased labourer)
Reference Number:283 SPK/3/

Him from 22 Rockingham St, her from 15. Witnesses Michael Driscoll & Mary Mahoney.

States in margin "copy given 17/11/1909" maybe because he died??

In Christina's 1881 census, Head of the household is Patrick Higgins, 47 Ireland - with wife and children and a couple of nephews. Then a list of lodgers, including George/Jane/Florence. I think Ellen Butler is the head's sister and nothing to do with George/Jane.

So, where is Eugene??

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 1 Sep 2013 01:07

This looks like George, Jane & Florence in 1881. They appear to be boarders, but the rest of the household is not shown on this transcription and as I don't have a sub I am unable to view the image.

No sign of Eugene.

So hopefully Antonio's birth certificate would show her maiden and previous married name (assuming the records found are the right ones)?

Flip

Flip Report 31 Aug 2013 22:41

So, by 1901 Jane was remarried and called Hayes, having married and named her father as Patrick McAuley. She and two youngest children on 1901 census, then she is with married daughter Helen (Helena/Eleanor) in 1911 as a widow, born Liverpool?

So, wonder if she was married before George, hence the McSweeney name?
