About Canada, Voters Lists, 1935-1980

This database contains preliminary voters lists for general elections in Canada, 1935–1980.

Historical Background

By 1935, the year of the earliest voting records in this database, the franchise had been extended to both men and women age 21 and over for federal elections in Canada. The last property qualifications were done away with in 1948, and exclusions for Inuit and Indians living on reserves were eliminated in 1950 and 1960. In 1970, the voting age was lowered to 18 and the franchise reserved for Canadian citizens, though some British subjects retained their right to vote until 1975.

What You Can Find in the Records

This database contains voters lists created for general elections in Canada for the years 1935–1980. Lists are organized by polling district within each province and from there by polling station number and address. The forms varied some over the years, but they typically included name, post office or street address, and occupation. They sometimes indicate marital status for women in lieu of occupation.

Because they were created during various election years, these lists make useful census substitutes.

This database includes the following general election years. Those marked by asterisk have been indexed. Others are available for browsing only.

As he married in Quebec in 1922, it's more than likely that he died in Canada.

John Report 10 Sep 2013 18:31

John Report 10 Sep 2013 11:37

Just checked his Birth Certificate, he did have Watson as well

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 10 Sep 2013 11:30

He probably didn't have Watson on his birth cert, but as he knew who he was named for, ( his grandfather) he added it in anyway!
( my rellies who emigrated tended to do the same thing)
I did notice that his grandfather also called himself "William Pettigrew Watson"!

John

John Report 10 Sep 2013 11:23

Got it, didn't think he had Watson as a middle name as well

As a rule, I dont research siblings of anyone who married into my family but looking at William on census returns, his wife was called Jane/Jeannie.
His age, place of birth and names of his children, suggests he is Rachel Watson's brother?

My research follows only the marriage and children of Rachel Watson, daughter of John Watson and Elizabeth Pettigrew

John

John Report 10 Sep 2013 10:44

She was the daughter of William Watson, what name do you have for the mother?

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 10 Sep 2013 10:26

John,
Out of interest, are you reasearching the Watson line too?

I'm guessing here, but the mother Elizabeth Pettigrew Watson... was she the daughter of William Watson, grand daughter of ...John Watson and Elizabeth Pettigrew?

This family appear in my tree as Rachel Watson, daughter of John Watson and Elizabeth Pettigrew married one of my rellies.
