Looking at the dates from the Army records, I think this is a likely scenario:

George is sent to France in Nov 1914 leaving Mary Kate pregnant; she goes to Dublin to have the baby, saying she is married; registers the baby with George as the father; George is discharged and remobilized in 1916 when he marries Mary Kate before being sent back to France.

Wondering if Mary Kate went to relatives in Ireland, there is only one Glaysher/zer family in the 1911 Irish census

It might be worth tracing George back to see if he is related to Mary Kate.

Also, from his Service record, he was a prisoner of war.

There is also a letter from Mary Kate, date Feb 14 1917 saying that she will write for and send on the birth cert of her child. Was Gladys b1920 their only child? If so, it looks as if Martha was born before the marriage.

Ian, are you paging through the images (use the arrows at the bottom by the number).

In the service records, there is a letter from George in reply to one from the Army,.in which he questions his records. He says that he joined up in 1914 and served with the BEF in France from 14 Nov 1914 until 1916 - just about possible for him to have had a daughter b 2 qtr 1915.

Is he shown as a batchelor on his marriage cert?

I can view the basic details as above but on seeing the originals there is not much data there.
Maybe looking at the wrong files?

Morning Ian,

Russia is a possible, can't find anything to tie Mary into previous census. However I think we should also consider Ireland playing apart in the family. She was with the Thompson family in 1911 who were from Ireland and Martha is definitely a family member. George's WW1 service papers confirm he married Mary Kate Glayzer in 1916, and he had to produce his marriage certificate to them, however he hadn't presently got his daughters birth certificate and would send it on later!!!

The irish birth is the only one I could see, I checked under the name Glayzer for a birth in the form on surname or mothers maiden name, nothing shows up......something is amiss here.

Going out today, if nobody pops in and finds more I'll have another fig about when I get back in.

Here is what I have so far still looking for family details for Mary and her Glayzer family. in 1901 census report Mary was shown to be born London area 1888

Are George Barfields WW1 service papers on the other site? If it is him, the daughter Martha born 15.05.1915, who's daughter is she?

If that is her death, why is there no indication of a second forename? Did she, perhaps, add the name Kate herself?

As the writing is obviously extremely indistinct, I doubt that you can be confident of any of the letters
