Hello Daniel, there is no additional information on the census image other than onn the transcription that was posted on page 1.

As Christina explained above, small rural communities usually didn't have addresses as we do now.

DANIEL

DANIEL Report 23 May 2014 20:53

Is it Possible to see where John Barnard was living in South Hanningfield?

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 11 Mar 2014 17:22

The area you are talking about, Daniel, appears to be made up mainly of farmer's cottages.

These cottages wouldn't have been numbered. Any letter being sent to the occupants would just have gone to the local post office.

So the census enumerator has distinguished between each cottage by a thick line underneath each household.

The Hawk Inn being the only one named as it was the only building in the road that had a name or number.

Hope that makes it less confusing for you :-)

DANIEL Report 10 Mar 2014 10:47

Next door but one? Does it say the address? And what about William smith what address is he at? When I looked at the census it just says the Hawk,Rettendon.

Can any one tell me about the census and how comes there are 3 different ones for one house?

DANIEL

DANIEL Report 8 Mar 2014 10:40

1851 census for Hawk Inn,Rettendon/Battlesbridge. How comes there are so many different ones? I've seen one with the Mann Family and my great, great Grandad James Smith as a lodger, I've seen another one for the 1851 with the rest of James Smiths Family i.e William & Elizabeth and their sons and daughters living there, and now aparently The Kendall family was living there in 1851 different census! I am finding this very confusing...

DANIEL

DANIEL Report 8 Mar 2014 10:08

Sorry if I make things confusing! I can trace Elizabeth Kendall from 1811 she married William Smith, 1841 she was living at Wick House,Rettendon age 40,1851 living at Hawk Inn Rettendon age 56,1861 Living at Hoe lane age 60,1871 Living by Chelmsford road age 76. I find it hard as her age and the spelling of her surname seem to change! Just wanted to find out where she was born and who her parents where.

Thanks for all your help and patients!

What makes you think they are out of area Daniel, have a look back at Census records posted earlier.

You need Seax for Parish Records.

DANIEL Report 8 Mar 2014 09:08

Sorry yes my mistake it was meant to be 1795. They was Married 19/11/1811 - All Saints, Rettendon. If they are from out of the Rettendon area and move into the area is there any way of tracing where they have come from?

Not sure there is much online Parish Records, you need the Seax website, to look up Baptisms etc.

Chris :)

edits (have you checked 'Search All Members Trees' (top right of page, under 'Search') in fact I think LadyKira helps out here!.

Whats the chance of going back much futher than this? Is it possible to Look up where Wick House,Rettendon might have been?

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 25 Nov 2013 21:40

Daniel, There's only the one James Smith born around 1820 from Rettendon. The one in the 1871 census living as a lodger is your one.

Baby son, Harry, is living with his mother, Susan Barnard, in 1871. They are both living with Susan's parents, John and Lucy Barnard.

Harry is under the name of Harry S. Barnard.

He was baptised in Rettendon on 21/8/1870 as Harry Smith Barnard - mother Susan. No mention of his father.

DANIEL

DANIEL Report 25 Nov 2013 20:23

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 25 Nov 2013 19:44

Daniel - are you sure he is your grandad and not your great grandad? For him to be your father's father i.e. your grandad, Florence would have to be dead, he would have to have remarried to Constance and would be 71 at the time of Reginald's birth!

I personally would get the marriage certificate of Harry and Constance.....
