I have just been checking through my earlier queries and realised that I never posted an update on this thread.

I bought a copy of the birth certificate for Alice Linge born in the Gateshead District of County Durham. Alice was indeed the daughter of John and Sarah Linge (b Sarah Ann Wallis). Alice was born at Dunston, near Gateshead in 1874. I now know that the family must have first moved to Tyneside from Essex before moving to rural County Durham.

Alice is my great-aunt and she died in Kent.

Thank you everyone for your help.

JoyLouise Report 4 Jan 2014 21:08

I have another Linge puzzle, I'm afraid.

In 1881 in Essex, the two brothers John and William have girls living with them - William with Annie (whom I believe is Ada Alice Annie born Staindrop, Co Durham) and John who has Alice (a year different in age but whom I thought was Ada Alice Annie who was living between the two brothers, her mother having died).

Annie married Elijah Saville/aka Saveall and they are mentioned above.

However, I have found an Alice Linge marriage in Kent to Albert John Channon in 1898 - discovered when I was checking the 1911 Census for Alfred Linge b c1873 in Essex. In 1911 Alfred is listed as the stepbrother of Alice and the three of them are living in Fulham.

Kent was where Sarah Linge married (John and Sarah's daughter) and lived afterwards at Sheerness, Sheppey.

My dilemma is - who is Alice? The only other Alice Linge I can find born in County Durham was at Gateshead. John, wife Sarah and children lived in the Bishop Auckland area so any birth would have been registered in the Auckland District or Teesdale/Darlington. I am now puzzled and wonder whether I've got two girls with the Christian name Alice - and did John and Sarah indeed have a daughter called Alice - but registered for some reason at Gateshead, Co Durham.

I am completely flummoxed now and wonder whether anyone can help me at all, please?

Thanks for directing me to Elijah's photograph, Chris.

Catherine,

I don't need to buy Ada Alice Annie Linge's birth certificate because I've rung the Bishop Auckland Registrar (County Durham). She was really helpful.

Although she is not allowed to give me information from the certificate, she was able to answer 'yes' or 'no' when I gave her the names of Annie's (A A A Linge) parents - she then confirmed that William and Eliza Linge (nee Woodly) were indeed Annie's parents.

I tried this with the Essex Registrar (only because I live nowhere near and there were a lot of Linge births there) but I got nowhere as she said I would have to buy each individual certificate.

I've appreciated the help I've had with Annie, thank you.

Just a quickie then must get to work!

Just found Peter Lodge's 1952 probate, admin was to Reginald Lodge, engineer. I'm guessing Reginald changed his name legally for inheritance purposes.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Nov 2013 08:30

Just to clarify the Ockendon/Lodge marriage to Annie E Saveall (Annie Linge's daughter) - Shirley has posted Reginald John Ockendon's 1901 birth above.

It appears that he was born before his mother Ruth's marriage later in 1901 so was correctly recorded as Ockendon. He is recorded in the 1911 under his mother's married name but originally married Annie in his "legal" name of Ockendon. at some point he has changed his name to Lodge, hence the amendment to his marriage record (I think the page 784a on the second registration of the marriage signifies that it's an amendment to the first registration, there is a handwritten entry on the original image of the index). This also explains why the daughter's 1930 birth has been re-registered.

I've just checked the birth of Lodge/Ockendon that you mentioned, Catherine.

I think you may be right and it ought to be Hodge. The Lodge information has been handwritten at the bottom of the page (with a handwritten version already crossed out once). It looks as though the Registrar/person who entered the details was unsure.

Marie Celeste, £413 in 1959 would have bought a house I believe - and no inheritance tax to pay!

I love the fact that Annie and Elijah were into growing things - and also that Elijah was known for his riotous behaviour in pubs! It's lovely to have snippets of family 'doings' as it 'beefs up' the picture one forms about people.

Thank you, yet again, Marie Celeste.

I've very much appreciated your help with my many queries and it's enabled me to 'grow' a much-enlightened family tree.

There's a very sad article in the Chelmsford Chronicle of Friday 02 June 1944 about Annie and Elijah's granddaughter Josephine Adelaide Joyce Saveall, she died unexpectedly aged 21 on 21 May 1944 and was buried on the day she was to have been married to her fiance Gunner T Hawkins.

She was the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs B Saveall of 15 Hill Rise Cottages and she worked at Woolworths.

Other Savealls mentioned in the list of mourners are grandmother Mrs A Saveall and her sister Mrs L Gregory.

It mentions that her grandfather Elijah was killed by enemy action in 1940.

This looks like Annie's probate, it would have helped if you'd mentioned her full name at the outset because I nearly ignored it!

Alice is definitely not Annie's mother. Annie (Ada Alice Annie Linge b 1875 at County Durham) is the daughter of William and first wife Eliza.

I'll plug away at the Saveall marriages.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 26 Nov 2013 20:04

Got the Eliza and two marriages for William Linge (2nd Alice Jane Copsey) but try as I might I can't find a death of an Annie Ockenden or Annie Hodge that fits with the two marriages in 1925. I think one must be the mother and one the daughter.

Since the Hodge marriage is listed as Annie E Saveall I suspect that this is the daughter because mother Annie did not have a name beginning with the initial E.

However, I've searched births for both Ockenden and Hodge to 1930 and come up with noting that would give me the mother's maiden name. I am not expecting to find Linge as a maiden name because I think Annie may be about past her child-bearing years; but I can't come up with a Saveall maiden name either.

Spotted the 1925 marriage Shirley - in fact there were two in 1925 and the other surname was Hodge.

I was wondering whether it was Annie marrying again or whether it was her daughter - or whether it was both of them.

I'm now going to look at deaths of Annie Ockendon and Annie Hodge to see if any tie up with birth years.

Many thanks.
