Hello Peter, an I just check that her son's surname was Sosbe? So was Middleton Emma's maiden name - do you know who she married?

LUCK AT LAST.
OLD DIGGER'S FIND.
TARNAGULLA Saturday, - The 14oz slug won by James Sosbey in the red clay last week was a godsend to a poor man, 76 years of age, formerly resident in Swan street, Richmond. The old man arrived on the field last Christmas, and selected a 42ft by 42ft claim. He has methodically worked two-thirds of his holding for an
average depth of 3ft., but the slug is the
first "colour" he has picked yet. It will return him about 30/ per week for his enterprise.

Peter has Thomas Sosbe, 1764, Strood, in his tree, James Sosbe, 1853, Sheerness, and Elizabeth Sosbe, 1854, Chapel Street, Bluetown, Sheerness, amongst others.

The information he wanted was about Emma Middleton, however.

Peter, we do need some guidance as to what you know so we do not repeat your research.

PM received......have advised Peter that he must post on here

The child was born to Emma Middleton.

The father was Thomas Sosbe, who was married to someone else at the time

Peter...............

The 'marked as answered' tag is supposed to be used ONLY after the enquiry has been FULLY resolved.................

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2013 15:47

To be fair Reggie, the "Mark as Answered" tick is very misleading and doesn't come with instructions for newcomers to the boards (the sooner GR get rid of that tick after years of asking the better).

Have also received a similar pm:

"Sorry I typed baptism, should have been birth. Thomas James Sosbe was born 01/04/1854 St James Westminster. I have copy of birth cert. Father was Thomas Sosbe who was born 1830 and married Harriet Porter. Only details on Emma is from Thomas's birth cert. Looking for her birth/marriage/death. Thanks for your help"

Peter - were there any addresses on the birth certificate? Am I right in thinking that Thomas acknowledged paternity by being named on the certificate?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2013 15:52

I know it's Emma that Peter is looking for but doing a bit of research into Thomas can't hurt as it might lead us to where his path crossed Emma's

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

Name: Thomas Sosbe
Spouse Name: Harriet Porter
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 8 Jun 1829

Neither previously married. Witnesses James Sosbe and James Porter.

ADDED: I think there's a generation skipped somewhere.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2013 16:10

If the widow Harriet Sosbe who remarried in 1835 was originally Harriet Porter then how could her husband be deceased if he fathered a child in 1854?

Could it be a son of Harriet and Thomas snr who was really the father?

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: Thomas Sosbe
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 2 May 1830 - born 7 April
Father's Name: Thomas Sosbe - Fitter Foundry
Mother's Name: Harriet Sosbe
Parish or Poor Law Union: Shoreditch St Leonard
Borough: Hackney
Register Type: Parish Registers

Address: Luke Street.

It's interesting that Reynolds newspaper has an article in 1897 from a Thomas Sosbe enquiring about brother James going to Australia in 1854 - same year as Emma Middleton's son was born.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2013 16:23

Ah, just checked the image for the 1835 marriage for Harriet Sosbe to Edmund Wilcox - one of the witnesses was James Porter and it's the same signature as on the 1829 marriage.

So, unless she was committing bigamy, her first husband Thomas Sosbe could NOT be the father of Emma Middleton's child. It has to be one of the sons.

patchem

patchem Report 31 Dec 2013 16:41

Sorry for being really slow- is Emma Middleton married to another Thomas Sosbe when she gives birth to her son Thomas Sosbe?
Otherwise he would be Thomas Middleton?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2013 17:10

Further pms:

"address on birth cert 57 poland street golden square st james westminster.mother emma sosbe formerly middleton. father thomas sosbe, watch hand maker.registered 09/05/1854"

and

"thomas/harriets son born 1830 was the parents to thomas, married to emma and father to thomas born 1854.thomas must have been family christian name,at least four in succession.james sosbe and james porter witnesses at marriage were brothers of bride and groom. "

Well, I'm pleased that's cleared up but the first message said that the Thomas who fathered Thomas James Sosbe in 1854 was married to Harriet Porter - that's obviously incorrect as she was his mother.
