I have found three marriages between a thomas carter and eliza all in 1904 not sure which one it could be can anyone help please?

thanks

patchem Report 19 Jan 2014 10:49

Which ones have you got, as I have:
Marriages Dec 1903
CARTER Thomas Johnson Basford 7b 293
Marriages Jun 1904
CARTER Thomas E. Retford 7b 29

but neither give a child called Walter.

This looks like Mary Ellen's birth (as in 1911 census)
Births Mar 1906
Carter Mary Ellen Ecclesall B. 9c 440
so would also confirm mother's maiden name.

Clare

Clare Report 19 Jan 2014 14:39

The 3 I have found are Eliza Parry married in Nottinghamshire East Retford, Eliza Ratican married in Lancashire Prestwick and Eliza Smalley married in Lancashire Bolton. Thomas and Eliza's children are Thomas, John, Emma Elizabeth and Mary Ellen.

Thanks

Catherine

Now we know the 1911 census is correct, then this may be Thomas in 1901 (it's the nearest I can see for the moment) ?

1901 England Census about Tom Carter
Name: Tom Carter
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Relation to Head: Servant
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Billinghay; Dale, Lincolnshire, England
Civil Parish: Babworth
Town: Ranby
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England
Street Address: Beechwood Farm

Occupation: Waggoner on the farm

Condition as to marriage: Single

Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Robert Chester 50
Fley H Chester 47
Charles W Chester 23
Herbert H Chester 20
Robert Chester 18
Alice M Chester 16
Joseph Chester 14
George F Chester 12
Flay H Chester 9
Maude Chester 7
Edith M Chester 3
Nellie Chester 11 Months
Tom Carter 22

................as for a marriage (as stated before), you will need the birth certificate of one of the children to confirm mother's maiden name.

The census does put him in Nottinghamshire in 1901 so your Nottinghamshire marriage may be the fore runner, especially as the marriage was registered in E.Retford which is the reg.dist. for Babworth.

Taking a look for an Eliza Parry in 1901 census, there is this one, with same age and place of birth as Eliza married to Thomas in 1911 census, and she is living Sheffield, so this one is looking good:-

Catherine

Catherine Report 19 Jan 2014 15:03

There is also a birth that would fit with name Walter, although not same area:-

Births Mar 1915 (>99%)
Carter Walter Parry Birkenhead 8a 876

.............but with the job Thomas had, it is possible that he travelled quite a bit.

Clare

Clare Report 19 Jan 2014 15:21

Brilliant thank you think we are on the right track with eliza parry :-)

Catherine

Catherine Report 19 Jan 2014 15:28

Hi Clare,
I would strongly recommend though that you buy one of the birth certificates just to make sure as it would be a shame to go on and research Eliza Parry only to find at a later stage that it was incorrect and have to start all over again.

Catherine

Catherine Report 19 Jan 2014 15:35

Billinghay, was registration district Sleaford so this could well be birth for Thomas:-

Births Mar 1879 (>99%)
Carter Tom Sleaford 7a 463

The district Sleaford is in the county of Lincolnshire
which covered Billinghay, Lincolnshire from 1837 - 1889

.............................which makes 1901 census I found even more likely to be correct.

Clare

Clare Report 19 Jan 2014 15:37

Thanks we're applying for the birth certificate of Thomas Carter born 1910 as you say at least we will know for definite of the mother's maiden name.

:-)
