Find Ancestors

Hi, Thomas Dartnell 1861-1905 born in St.Lukes, London,married to Clara Ary 1861-1937, is listed as being an inmate at Wandsworth Prison in 1881, yet he is working as a civil servant at the Mint in 1891! I would really like to find out why he ended up in prison, can anyone help? I have so far been unable to find anything under newspapers on genes website. Many thanks

He married Clara Elizabeth Vose.

Re latest post from Chris, this tallies with my tree, I am definitely related to the Bartels this is common knowledge within my family.

Chris you're on the same track as I am.

There is a probate for the Tom Dartnell from Croydon to his wife Emma. His father was also a Thomas Dartnell so thats why he comes up as Tom I should think.

Thomas Dartnell is the uncle to my grandfather, on my fathers side of the family! My grandfather is Ernest Henry Dartnell 1900-1988

That looks like what I found re 1871 census. Looks like my Thomas was not at Wandsworth after all re 1881? Also looks like I have been looking at the wrong marriage for Clara. Ah well!

I have found my East End relatives quite a challenge to research, with all the place names seeming to change, and with missing marriages and lack of parish records. I also have a link by marriage between the Dartnell's and Vanlints, but there are no parish records I could find for these either, although I had read that the Vanlints are originally Huguenots that came to England in 1685.

Jean I think you need to put Clara Elizabeth Vose as Thomas's wife. I have given you the details.
