Hi Porkie Pie
I'm not a member of Ancestry at the moment but have not managed to find any war records for Fred, only his brother Harry who was killed in 1915 elsewhere.

Porkie_Pie Report 29 Jan 2014 21:35

If Fred was in the territorials then he should have a service record for WW1 although most didn't survive it may be worth looking on Ancestry just incase,

It should have details of next of kin and if he married who he married and any children born whilst serving,

Once you know the DOB - if it isn't 5/4/1893 - post the details and we'll take another look for a possible death.............

Use this thread................just put 'update' in the title, to attract our attention

Reggie - I did look for the death details you had found - but could not find them myself - where did you find those?

Alison

Alison Report 29 Jan 2014 13:32

Thank you Roy. Unfortunately, I really don't have any details of his marriage at all so cannot apply for a marriage certificate. All I know is details up until 1915 and his niece passed on that he had moved to Rochdale and had a daughter named Margaret.
That is the reason why I don't think the Skipton details are probable.

I will do as Reggie suggests and get his birth certificate (5th April was also my Dad's birthday) and see whether he did die in Leigh and who registered the death. Thank you all for your help.

Your best bet would be get his birth cert........find out EXACT DOB.

If it was a match for the death I posted.....get a copy of the death cert, to find out the informant's details

It really is counter-productive to base your searches on hearsay...........you can waste so much time and effort in so doing.

Get some concrete facts...........for your own sake.

You have not past comment on the post by Maddie above 28 Jan 2014 14:32 A possible marriage for a Fred Holmes who married a Harrison in district Skipton, which is not far from Northallerton and their are births in that area for possible children to that marriage registered in Settle just up the road again from Skipton

Fred was not calling himself Thomas, you are obviously following the wrong man based on hear say probable's and possible matches of records in the index

You need to find and buy the correct marriage certificate in order to confirm who married who, (the cert will give you fathers details)If known, Only then can you possibly look for and confirm any possible children born to that marriage.

After following Reggie's advice I have looked at the Lancashire BMD register and found the birth of Margaret E Holmes in Wardleworth, Rochdale in 1922. Sadly in the deaths details is the death of Margaret Ellen Holmes of Wardleworth, Rochdale, Aged 0 in 1922 so I think I now know I won't be finding any further details about Margaret however, it may be that Fred did go on to have other children. Thank you Stuart - that could be the marriage - but not sure why Fred would be calling himself Thomas.

Reggie and Stuart, thank you. I don't know what Fred's wife's names were - but from what you say it would suggest her surname may have been Harris and their daughter born in Rochdale in 1922 was Margaret M N? Not very experienced in all this - I will look at the links you sent me. Just trying to find out whether Margaret is still alive or married and had a family who are around today.

Did you see my post about the MMN?

If the man married a woman named Harrison, the birth CANNOT be his daughter

Stuart - No, all I do know from a now deceased family member is that he was known to have lived in Rochdale and had a daughter, Margaret. Thank you, I will check those links Reggie.

You can't be absolutely sure it was your Fred Holmes who married Eva Harrison unless you get the certificate - it is a finding based on your "slight chance he married a ? Harrison" Or do you know he did?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 28 Jan 2014 16:18

That 1922 birth has MMN Harris..........NOT Harrison
