GR probably saw that this one had a load of replies.....although nothing to do with the question and thought best to keep it :-D

The other thread has been deleted? How silly!!!

From what I can remember there was a discussion between 2 of GR's Military Minded Members, that the Henry was in the Royal Army Ordnance >Corps< - not a Battalion or Regiment.

His service records would still be with the MOD if you wanted more accurate details. They can be purchased for £30 (free if his widow can sign the form). Follow the links from here

Poppy – at the top of the thread just before your opening post it will read

Poppie…..Report….Edit…Delete……..12 Feb 2014 08:21

To delete a thread, click on the Delete link – not recommended as this is now the only one on GR. It only works if you are the opening poster.

If you wanted to remove your own post in the body of someone else’s thread, then do the same. Aside from GR, only the Originator of a thread can delete the whole thing.

jax Report 17 Feb 2014 15:47

The person/s who report threads doesn't normally own up

Although this should not have been reported, I cannot understand why GR have kept this one and deleted the one with useful replies

But that just goes to show that as I have always thought, GR do not read the threads

Hello All

I have received this from GR Team

You recently added a message board response using your Genes Reunited membership.

The post that you made reads as follows;

Hello All
I am trying to find some information for a friend, he would like to locate anyone who may have served with his dad during National Service.

Edward Henry Atkins
DOB 29 May 1934
Died 2005

Served 1952 ? Malaysia
1953 Singapore

Company may have been R A O C

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Poppie

It has been brought to our attention that this posting was actually added twice so we have removed one of them from the site.

Kind Regards,

Genes Reunited Support Team

I wonder who brought it to their attention !!!! as you know I posted here first then on another post as suggested, I didn't know I had to delete this one Boy what a mistake !!!!

Hello D Confused

You mention the word 'polite'

Would you like to receive your (above) message?

I wouldn't.

Thank You and all of you who have shown support :-)

Reggie - sorry

mgnv

It has been posted on military chat.....I would imagine that was the reason for this one being reported

mgnv

mgnv Report 14 Feb 2014 02:26

Reggie - "Post this on Military Chat" - a bit misguided, that (although I admit I can't see the original post).
Certainly during WW2, not everyone who completed National Service did it in the military - 10% of those conscripted served as miners - the so-called Bevin's boys. The last of these completed their service in 1948.

As you have been a member since 2005 you should really know the 'polite' rules of the boards. ie one post on one board for a specific query.

Posting the same request on 2 boards is frowned upon, purely because some people will not look at all the boards, and you will get the same replies from many people. Nothing annoys members more than doing a lot of research for another member only to find out that it has all been done on another Board. Remember people are using their subs to help you.

Stick to one board (common practice) and you will get all the help you need from that one post.

Why can't we be nice to each other????

Are the Boards becoming something of a Police State?

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 13 Feb 2014 19:40

I am assuming that all the bad vibes are being aimed at me!!!

I was not rude, sharp or impolite.

I merely stated the facts which have in the past been told to me in far less polite ways.

Ann

You stated I have never ever been unkind to a newbie, or anyone else for that matter
you posted abrupt maybe - but to the point, then
I realise Reggie can be abrupt. Yet you had agreed with him hadn't you ???

you also posted part of your quote:
do searches themselves - which on the whole is more satisfying than having someone else find the info for you,

Not a helpful comment most of us just need pointing in the right direction Newbie or not.

You also posted problem with the written word is that there are no accompanying gestures (why would you want any??) that makes such a difference

What difference,as I said It's not what you type but the words and tone you type !!!!

You weren't being attacked..............for pity's sake. Don't be so touchy
your reply to that was
I'm with you on that Reggie

Why even get embroiled in this

No I couldn't understand why the thread was taken off or by who either

I'm not going to prolong this thread,I think by the supportive response and comments from the others you have the answer there have been many that stand out here are some

I have been around quite a while and I still would not like to be "spoken" to the way some posters get treated.
There is a world of difference between being "To the point" and being "Blunt". It is perfectly possible to be "To the point" without the risk of causing possible offence.

Remember that the responsibility for communication rests firmly with the communicator.

I'd hate to be someone new to the boards if I was greeted with some of the sharp remarks on this thread.

It doesn't encourage newbies to post in fear of being accused of wasting someone's time.

please try and be sensitive to people who are not as aware of the rules as some of you on this site.

Again I thank those of you who posted support and recommendations on how to reply to post in a polite and helpful manner

Jax ,BananaNaNa HeyJudeB4Beatles, Gin,Cynthia TootyFruity Suzanne MarieCeleste Jonesey Persephone sorry if I missed anyone

Thank you for your support its much appreciated.

I may have been a member since 2005 I don’t use GR everyday so do not have the experience others have.

Yes it is fun and interesting to look for things yourself and I do as much researching as I can from the avenues I have in Ancestry (where I have helped others with their search) Free BDM and Family Search .org.
If I have to ask for help on GR I always appreciate the time people take, as I said until now people have always been kind.
I tried to do the right thing for my friend by posting on the correct board, in future I will use as you suggested Find Ancestors  it will avoid some of the unnecessary comments

ie  Remember people are using their subs to help you.
We all do don’t we
and
satisfying than having someone else find the info for you

Clearly being long term members some individuals have not been taught It's not what you type but the words and tone you type !!!!

As you kind people pointed out
I would not like to be "spoken" to the way some posters get treated.

Have you tried?or Could you please

Comes over much nicer than 'Use' or 'post this'

tact and diplomacy are missing whatever happened to giving advice in a polite, friendly and pleasant manner?

Some comments ARE very abrupt and snappy and I would be most upset if they were aimed at me.

I always try to do it in a pleasant and positive way - that is how I was brought up.

For heaven's sake, It should be perfectly possible to give guidance without making people feel small.

Long term membership of this site is not a sign of knowledge as to how the boards work.

posting the same query on more than one board just causes a possible duplication of effort...but we've all been there done that I suspect....but only once

I find these comments about how long a person has been a member.....they should know this and that rather stupid.

I'd hate to be someone new to the boards if I was greeted with some of the sharp remarks on this thread.

It doesn't encourage newbies to post in fear of being accused of wasting someone's time.

The key test is to imagine yourself being the recipient of your own words. Would you, as an unknown stranger, be entirely happy to receive them exactly as you have written them?

Kind regards to those mentioned, again I thank you for your support its much appreciated I'm pleased to know I wasn't being touchy , my thread wasn't hijacked no apologies needed thank you for the support.

Poppie

P.S I do hope the main contenders treat others a little better now (or we may lose them) no matter how long they have been Members we all pay our subs

The key word is EMPATHY.

"The ability to understand and share the feelings of another."

have to agree with most of the posters on here about tone.

some people are sensitive ,

ive been on here since 2002 and I still don't know all the rules,it depends on how much help your asking for,if you ask for a lot of help, then I think you learn along the way,if you don't ask for help much, then its trial and error.

please try and be sensitive to people who are not as aware of the rules as some of you on this site.

No Reggie you don't do waffle but can at times be irritatingly blunt. (and that my friends is about as impolite as I get)

Not everyone has the same degree of confidence as most of us do when it comes to posting on internet forums. I know I'm not perfect and can be terse with people who refuse to co-operate but I do always try to be welcoming to new posters and do always, when necessary, try to explain the relevance of what I'm posting rather than just throw information at them. I don't consider any of that as "waffle".

Poppie - apologies for us hijacking your thread a bit, but please don't be put off asking for help.
