Thunderjack Report 26 Apr 2014 05:38

Hi All,
Richard married Julia Stella in 1860 West London and had (3) three children:
Stella Maria b. 1859 baptised 1860 St. Albans Hertford
Lawrence John b. 1862 Ongar- Bobbingworth- Essex
Thompson Fairfax b. 1866. Reigate Union-Reigate-Surrey

In 1867 Julia Stella Smith (why not Webster) married John Thomas Jocelyn (Josling) and I believe Julia changed her children's names to Jocelyn.

On the b.cert. of Lawrence his father R.Webster was a Commercial Traveller
On the b.cert. of Thompson his father R.Webster was a schoolmaster

Julia Stella Smith was born in Bradford, Yorkshire

I'm searching for birth, death certs. for Richard Webster but to no avail.
My fathers middle name is Thompson. Always wondered why Thompson not Thomas
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Mal

I think you're missing a child, on 15/7/1866 Thompson Fairfax was christened, along with Russell Fletcher Webster age 2.5years. The address given was Chigwell House, Redhill, and fathers occupation states "gentleman" christened at St Matthews, Redhill.

Richard was a merchant according to his marriage "full age" and a widower, but as he is not with Julia on the 1861 census it's difficult to know his age and place of birth.

Julia was recorded as married in 1861, and a widow in 1871 so second husband didn't live long after their marriage.

Mistycat's 1895 marriage looks right - she married John Oxford, they are on 1901 census - Julia born Bradford, but she's taken 10 years off her age!

So probably not him, if Chris's link is correct - they celebrated their golden wedding in 1891!

I think this might be Sarah just before the marriage. Father is listed as a Wool Stapler which is someone trading in wool. The marriage has her father as a Wool Merchant

I've added to the above census.

Note that son Robert was born in Dublin, this ties in with father Richard, giving his address on the marriage to Julia as Dublin

Flip

Flip Report 26 Apr 2014 10:49

I think Richard & Sarah are in Jersey in 1881/91 - he is a retired leather merchant. I wonder if he was naughty and married Julia bigamously, but got back with wife? Can't spot them 1861/71 though, although 2 of the children are with an aunt in Derbyshire.

Hence her reverting to maiden name on second marriage and stating she was single - if the first marriage wasn't legal, then she gave the correct status.
