Hi there,
Margaret Perry (c. 1822-1868) is my ancestor. She married in 1838 in Runcorn, Cheshire and on her marriage, she states her father as being Thomas Walker (so different surname on the certificate for father and daughter which is very uncommon in my experiences). In 1843, her daughter Harriet Thompson was born and Margaret is recorded as "Margaret Thompson, formerly Walker". With this in mind, I can't find a baptism for Margaret, who according to the census was born in Runcorn. Can someone here help me find a baptism (perhaps it is mistrancribed)?
I then found on the census a Thomas and Annie Walker living in Runcorn, Cheshire in the 1851. This seems to be their marriage:
Ann Perry
England Marriages, 1538–1973 marriage: 13 December 1824 St. Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England spouse: Thomas Walker
With this, would you suggest that Margaret is the biological daughter of Thomas Walker, or an adopted daughter?
Thank you,
Peter

If he was the only father she had known, she may have just named him rather than put Not known

Sounds as if she's Ann Perry's daughter, and therefore step-daughter of Thomas. Not necessarily adopted by him - she may just have taken his name.

I agree with ArgyllGran. I would think she was the daughter of Ann Perry and named Thomas as her father as he was the only father she knew.

She didn't take his name if she married in her birth name
I have one whose baptism I have found with only mother named...so obviously illigitamate.... then when she marries she names some man with a different surname, but up till now have not found a marriage for her mother to this man, so don't know if he was her step father or the man she was told was her father

Thank you for your opinions. Much appreciated.
I am still searching for the baptism of Margaret Perry but can't spot anything specifically.
Thank you again for your opinions.

That's true Jax, but seems odd when her siblings or half siblings were baptised.
And thank you Ann ... not sure if those entries pertain BUT they are probably connected somehow. Will have a look.

I have found 14 out of 15 (1 must of died soon after birth) of my grandmothers siblings baptisms but not one for her....Her parents moved from Islington to Walthamstow when she was born so would not be on the London baptisms....but checked on Seax for Essex records....still nothing
So have a feeling they didn't bother with her...different church ect
Also if your Margaret was illigitamate, maybe the Vicar wasn't keen to baptise her?

As you'll have noticed, the local index contains info that is not found in the GRO index. It has to contain the subdistrict/church, but this can be hidden in a code in the local ref, and isn't always made explicit, like here. This local index has some extra info, like the mum's maiden surname pre-1911, and the age at death pre-1866.

NB If you look up the film # in the FS catalog, it tells you what church record was being filmed.
