Jan... I wonder why I can't find the birth of the first child born 1901. I can find the 1906 birth but not the first one

That's interesting I hadn't noticed that on the census.

1911 census says 5 children 2 died
wonder if this is them one in 1906 named after one who died in 1901

it certainly does tie in nicely in fact in the record of baptism for william richardson rippon (i assumehe dropped the richardson as it totally dissappears) his fathers name is Nichol!! and that is remarkable as it is a very unusual name and i was wondering where it had come from. So the only problem seems to be the from the 1901 census where he loses 4/5 years fromhis age. But I suppose given that there are not a lot of william rippons coming up then it must be him. I will keep hunting for a marriage too. thank you, you have been so so helpfull

Possible William knocked a few years off his age as the mother of his children was younger than him. The Nicholas ties in nicely with your Nichol ancestors?

So this would be Williams parents? And where the William Richardson rippon comes from. It's interesting to me that if this is him his fathers name is Nicholas. Is it significant that this William is born 1864 and the census 1901 and 1911 is 1868?? Does this happen with birth years often?

I now have the birth certificate for nickel and his parents are indeed William rippon and Isabella formerly rutherford. As I can find no other variants if nichol Nicholas or nickel I'm fairly convinced this is my grandfather. But I can't find a marriage for William and Isabella Rutherford, anyone got any ideas of anything else I can try?

ok i will do that. I cant find a marriage for them either although interestingly i have found his marriage to the Mary E lewis (from the 1911 census) they married in 1919 it seems

I have looked for a marriage between William Rippon and Sybella/Isabella Rutherford and I can't find one up to now.

Much better to get the 1902 birth certificate for Nichel/Nichol/Nicholas. That way you will know for certain who his parents are.

If you send for Nichel's birth certificate from 1902 make sure you spell the name NICHEL or they may not issue it.
