"Prinde Wife 103rd Rginergpet." is one of the mistranscriptions I mentioned, Syd.

If you look at the version of the 1871 census record posted by alviegal, it reads:
Private A M 103rd Regiment Of Foot

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Aug 2014 23:31

The 1871 which William has already identified, and which I posted for our reference, is the correct one, with William living with his sister Catherine and her husband Andrew.

But the gunner from Leith may well be the one who died in 1880. If you view the image on SP, Syd, you'll find out whether it's your William who died, or some other William Ross.

The military record you found, Alviegal, re the man who was discharged in 1875, seems very likely the right one.

If he didn't die in 1880, and if he was a bookbinder before joining the army, I wonder if this could be him in 1891, in a vaguely related job?

I'm not saying the printer compositor is your William, necessarily, Syd. It's just a suggestion!

Syd

Syd Report 11 Aug 2014 11:42

Yes I do realise that but as his occupation was a bookbinder on his Army records it could be a possibility. Thank you once again.

I think this was confirmed as the 1851 for Hugh and William? The occupation is not bookbinder though. Of course, he could have become one in the 9 years before he signed up, if that is his service record.

Hi Alviegal,
Yes you have the correct family, Duncan Ross (1) born 1824, d. 1825. Duncan Ross(2) was my G.G.Grandfather he was born to Hugh & Isabella 1828 and Married Sarah Ann Whyte in 1856 at Woolwich, he died in India 1862 of Rabies.
The Alexander Ross b. 1820 is the only person I have never been able to find and I am wondering if maybe he died as a child.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Syd

Apart from a large number of Alexander Ross deaths 1820-41, which would mean spending a lot of credits to view the parents' names on all the records, there's this possibility below, but almost impossible to know if he's the right one or not.
Interestingly, he's a bookbinder!

As Isabella was born in Morton, Dumfries-shire, this would be their marriage. His father's name might perhaps be on the image, but info on old parish records (pre 1855) tends to be minimal.

Help!! I am trying to find details of the life of Isabelle Mackenzie,b. 1826. married George Ross in 1849 in the old school house in Nigg. George was b.about 1826 in Edinburgh parish and is described as a stone cutter or mason. They had at least 7-8 children and by 1881 were in the census for Edinborough. We know nothing of either family.
Also my gggrandfather, John Lindsay. Married Margaret Eggo and lived in Cortachy,Clova and Angus. Margaret was baptised in z,1783. Of either the Lindsay or the Eggo we know nothing.
William Graham b. 1856 in Ayr and married a Martha Craig. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you all. Ann Ross
