Jayne, why on earth would you start a new thread on the same family just hours after your previous thread? As you can see we just repeated what had already been found, making us look foolish.

I can find a grayland but not a grayling .Beverley w , the family name of my grandfather was grayling but like you say it shows graylands ..

If you look at Archie's birth on the index on freebmd, it looks like this.

Births Sep 1910
GRAYLING Archie ......Eastbourne 2b 70

but with the same page reference there is also.........

CURCHER Archie .....Eastbourne 2b 70

This might indicate that his parents were not married, but his father was at the birth registration and acknowledged his son.

It was not unusual for people to present themselves as married though at census, even if there had been no marriage.

So...
Archie's mother may have been Hannah CURCHER, but whether or not that was her birth name needs further investigation.
