You could try Cornwall Records Office to see what records they hold.

Would suggest emailing them in first instance.

Anne-Marie Report 5 Sep 2014 13:18

Thank you all for the valuable information which I am gathering information on now.

I wonder if you could give me some tips, I am visiting Cornwall next week looking arround the area my mother (Doris Evelyn Thornborrow) was raised by two Aunts the only things I have are old photo's which are the post card variety with Redruth on the back of them so I am assuming that they perhaps would have lived arround Redruth/Helston/ Mullion. area. The photos are taken in a house and garden so I don't think that they are holiday snaps and I have been told that this was were she lived before joing the WAAF in 1942. Are there any places wer old school records are kept. I did try the Air Force a few years ago and they did not have any school information recorded only her next of kin. Many thanks for any information that can be give.

Flip Report 24 Aug 2014 14:05

Following on from this family, brother Thomas Steel Thornborrow married Jane Hall (c1867) in 1896, Preston. He died in 1899, only 1 child I can see on Lancs bmd - John 1897, reg Preston sub district Broughton. Jane appears to be a widow in 1911 a domestic servant.

William married a Mary J (maybe Bell) in Whitehaven in 1890, she died in 1897 but they had 3 children born Whitehaven. Two were on the 1911 census with William in Barrow in Furness - Gilbert Edwin (17) and Annie Aileen (15), think the other child was Mary Elizabeth (1892), but she is not with him in 1911. William married Elizabeth Dodd in 1899 - she and her mother are with William on 1911 census.

They appear to have remained in Barrow as both Gilbert & Annie married there. Possible death for William in 1914 (but there were 2 living in Barrow of similar age) and Elizabeth in 1925.

That leaves Frank, who I haven't looked for yet. And Edith the mother - and I haven't found anything concrete on her as yet.

Flip Report 24 Aug 2014 10:51

Just to confirm I think we have the right family, Ada daughter of Edith and born 1893. When Ediths sister died, probate was granted to Ada Bickle (wife of William Bickle);

Emma Thornborrow
Probate Date:5 Mar 1957
Death Date:10 Feb 1957
Death Place:Westmorland, England

Emma, spinster of 6 Goodley-dale, Windermere.

So obviously not one of the elderley aunts in Cornwall - unless she live there for a while.

Thank you all for your valuable information which has given me renewed hope.

I have one more question my mother Doris Evelyn Thornborrow was raised by two elderly Aunts in Cornwall of whom I don't know names and addresses but think they lived in Redruth/Helton area. Is there any old school records that I can search.

Many thanks for any info. Anne-Marie

If the Ada Bickle/Davies is the correct one, I thing whoever registered this death got her age a year out:

Ada Davies
Birth Date:7 Apr 1892
Date of Registration:Jun 1978
Age at Death:86
Registration district:Birkenhead
Inferred County:Merseyside
Volume:37
Page:0847

From April 1974 Bebington came under the Birkenhead registration district. Chances are high that they were both buried or cremated at Landican Cemetery, Arrow Park Road. Wirral Archives have been very helpful in the past in looking up burial records, could be worth contacting them?

Good spot Andy, it would make Stephen a similar age to Ada (if the 1893 Ada is correct), he was 69 when he died.

Maybe they got divorced, there's no death for Ada that I can see - but there is a marriage on the Wirrall for Ada Bickle to a Davies (1959). She had connections to Chester area as that is where her daughter was born.

This could be completely wrong though.

Well spotted Flip- think you may be on to something

Flip

Flip Report 23 Aug 2014 09:31

She was on Ers at 123 Lillinton street as Ada Bickles until 1959, but as Gritty has posted was not there in 1960 onwards.

1960 was the only year Bill and Daisy Bickles appeared at that address - they were together at 91 Cambridge street in 1956 - so maybe William moved out to live with her. They are around on ERs as William & Daisy after 1961.

There is a marriage between William Bickle & Daisy in the March quarter 1959, could be related.

Gritty

Gritty Report 23 Aug 2014 09:16

In 1960 Ada's no longer registered at Lillington Street- which might suggest a move or her poosible death between 56-60?

Elaine,

I meant to mention that I think your information sounds like the closest to what I need and will research this more.

Many thanks.

There were no family witnesses at the marriage of William & Ada that I can see,

Thank you all for your speedy replies the information I am thrilled about and feel that I might be getting somewhere, I have also my mothers details sadly deceased when I was 4 years old and I did not know my father but now have quite a bit of information on him.

Doris Evelyn Thornborrow born 2nd March 1922 & died September 1956 in Nottingham she married just prior to this date to Raymond Cooper.

The last known address of my grandmother (Ada Thornborrow) was Lillington Street, Westminster. and that was the last contact we had in 1955/6.

Thank you again.

So who was the Doris Thornborrow living with Ada/William Bickle 1950/52/53 - could this be her daughter? Also with them in 1949, recorded as a service voter.

Born 1922 according in Chester I think, and married Cooper in 1956.
