Up until his death in1941 -

Deaths Dec 1941

Eaton Daniel 80 Stepney 1c 172

Daniel and Jessie Eaton were living (from about the date of their marriage) at 104 Grove Buildings, Stepney.

In 1946 (after Daniel's death) Jessie Eaton was living at the same address with a Jessie RITCHIE (possibly her granddaughter?)

Jessie Eaton was still at the property in 1951 and this looks to be her death in 1954

Deaths Dec 1954

EATON Jessie E 81 Stepney 5d 511

I don't think that James on the 1881 census is your Alfred's father.

Wondering if Ritchie was perhaps a stepfather's name?

I would also wonder at Jessie re-marrying using her maiden surname. Would it not have been usual, in England, for her to marry as Jessie Ritchie?

Again in England, was it not necessary to have the permission of a parent or guardian to marry if you were under 21? Just thinking out loud, Alfred claimed to be 21 when he married, but was he? Jessie may have stated she was an orphan as neither had permission to marry?

Martha died as a baby, I have quite a few parish records.
I'm loving his school records, haven't got any of these for my family's, must get more if I can with xmss pres.
The house is all upside down at moment,
But will get all paper work out hopefully this weekend, to search middle name documents.

dogsB, sorry but I find it really difficult to follow your posts.

However, where have you got the information he had a middle name - he didn't on 1891 or 1901 census, nor his marriage nor his children's christenings. I would have thought if he had a middle name (as Jessie did) it would show up on one of these records.

And he didn't use a middle name when he enroled his son very briefly (he left 26/10/99) in this school:

Alfred Jas Ritchie
Age:6
Birth Date:5 Sep 1892
School:Plumstead High Street School
Borough:Greenwich
Admission Date:3 Jul 1899
Parent:Alfred
Notes:High Street School, Plumstead (0783) opened in 1893. Renamed Plumstead High Street School in 1921, then Bannockburn School in 1951
Reference Number:LCC/EO/DIV06/HIG2/AD/001

Their address from this was 186 High Street.

Have marriage certificate for Alfred and Jessie.
Son Alfred was in army in1991 not sure about his mother Jessie.
Jessie marriage was to Daniel he was also on Alfred's and to Elizabeth Minnie Larkin who died and he married Florence Margarette Robinson in 1930.

Flip

Flip Report 23 Sep 2014 16:55

The father Alfred's occupation was labourer in arsenel on both children's christenings - on the 1891 census (born Glasgow) he was a labourer (GL) not a slater. I would be pretty sure it is him - address is a boarding house 11 Rope Yard ? - both their addresses were Rope Yard at the time of their marriage.

On both christenings she is recorded as Jessie Emma Ritchie, and I think she was born 1873 Redhills, Reigate Surrey. in 1881 she was living in Brighton - a neice of Corneleus John Hilland, so if that was where she was brought up she may have put that as place of birth.

Who did Jessie marry 'after 1916'?

I can't see any marriage for a Jessie Ritchie without a second initial before 1923, other than one in Gateshead, which seems unlikely

The son seems to have married in 1916

Where were Jessie and the son in 1911?
