Please can anyone help. Joseph Ambrose Dean born 1891 in Leeds.
I know all about his family in England but cannot access the following'

•U.S., Naturalization Records - Original Documents, 1795-1972 (World Archives Project)
•U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942

If it is possible for anyone with world wide membership It would really be appreciated to find out when and if he had any family in the US.

yes, I posted that 1920 census above (I didn't post all the unrelated people in the household, but I gave the link)

and Gritty has sent Barbara both the WWI and the WWII draft registration cards

Ann ... have you had any more luck then me finding Joseph in 1930 or 1940??

he had to be there, one would think, since he registered for the draft in 1942!

Thank you all for the info.

Ann that census has thrown up something interesting. Catherine Murphy born in Ireland. Joseph's Mother was originally a Catherine Murphy from Ireland so I am
now wondering if the one in the US is a relation.

Thanks again to you all you amaze me how quickly you find the information

Please could I ask another favour. The 1920 US census states that Mary Tasker was born in Ireland. I would like to know if there is a marriage with her Maiden name.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 26 Sep 2014 22:32

on the 1920 census, Charles Tasker born c1871 in Pennsylvania was married to Mary born c1880 in Ireland

so the marriage would have been in Pennsylvania ... she could have been a second wife, but she doesn't seem to be Rosie the mother of the Frank born in 1900 in PA

since there is a daugher Mary Perry aged 17 in the household, it does seem likely that Mary was the second wife of Charles, and Mary Perry is her daughter

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JV8F-8WG

Name: Tasker
Spouse's Name: Mary Perry
Event Year: 1909
License Number: 235950
Image Number: 00168 , Digital Folder Number: 4141908

So Mary Perry married Mr Tasker (no given name shown) 1909 Philadelphia
... this would be Charles Tasker's second marriage, to the Mary in the 1920 census

so all the children in 1920 but Frank are Mary's, from Charles Tasker's second marriage, which was in 1909 to Mary Perry

Frank Tasker is still with mother (stepmother) Mary in 1930:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XHZR-2TY

they now have a widowed Kate McCarthy born c1855 (aged 75) in the Irish Free State as border in the household

but unless there is some family connection between Charles Tasker or his first wife Rosie or his second wife Mary Perry and your Joseph Ambrose Dean ........ :-)

as far as Catherine Murphy, it isn't an uncommon Irish name ... this one was 10 years older than Joseph ... born c1882 and immigrated to the US in 1902

she could have been a cousin on his mother's side perhaps but that would be about the closest possible relationship

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 26 Sep 2014 23:06

Joseph's mother in the 1911 English census

Name: Catherine Dean
Age in 1911: 58
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Bax, Mayo, Ireland

do you know what 'Bax' is? that's what it looks like on the image

there were 5 Catherine Murphys aged 16-18 in county Mayo in the 1901 Irish census (plus 7 Kates and 3 Katies)

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

1901-1903 there 3 Catherine Murphys and a few dozen Caths, Kaths, Katherines, Kates and Katies with ages showing born 1881-1883 who immigrated to the US almost all departing from Ireland

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/passenger-lists-leaving-uk-1890-1960

I'm curious about Bax :-)

Gritty

Gritty Report 27 Sep 2014 07:28

Joonie- 'Bax' could possibly be a shortened 'Backs', which is a parish in County Mayo? As far as I can make out it includes Knockmore and Rathduff.

EDIT: The 1911 census states Catherine married in 1869. This looks like the marriage: Catherine Murphy married John Dean in Ireland 1869. There are two entries for them on RootsIreland, the second also gives mother's names:

04-Jan-1869

Spouse: Kate Murphy address: Ballina Occ: SP, Age: over 21

Wife's father: Michael Murphy, Occ: Farmer

yes, I posted the link to that 1930 census with Mary Tasker and stepson Frank :-)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XHZR-2TY

but since we don't have much reason to think they are related ...

Backs makes sense. Someone in the household wrote the info on the census schedule but it's hard to say who since the signature itself on the form is an x.

edit ... 1930, 1940 ... :-) main thing is, Joseph was simply boarding with them in 1920 as far as we know

Catherine Murphy from the 1920 could be of interest but I can't find any Cath* Murphy in 1930 or 1940 who isn't either married or a widow

it might be worth checking possible passenger records that might match her to see whether any potentially useful info turns up ... I can't do that, no proper sub

I would still guess she was just another boarder though ...
