There is a possible marriage for them in Warrington (previously posted) Simpson/Simpson - so maybe they did it out of area? And Jacqueline is right it was not legal to marry your brother-in-law at the time.

Probably someone will correct me if I am wrong but I think it was not legal to marry a deceased spouses sibling at that time. Possibly Joseph and Ann never married but still has the same surname.

Don't worry about time differences Carole, there's always someone around on here :-D

Thanks to all for finding all this info on George Simpson. You have
confirmed so much of what I thought was correct, but you have opened
a can of worms with the mention of another wife Ann.
I also think it was George's mother Mary who died in 1847.

Wow I can't believe there's so much help out there, even though I have been a member for some time, it was my first time on the Community site and I didn't know what to expect.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I am in Australia, about eleven hours time difference. Thanks again Pom

In the 1851 ...... Thomas Simpson was born in Wellington, Somerset about 1843

could this be his baptism, and therefore could James Simpson be Joseph's brother?

There's also a christening 25/2/1852 in Middlewich for Sarah Simpson (possibly the child on 1851 census), naming father Joseph & mother Ann.

I've just noticed this is Carole's first post.....I'll send a PM to let her know there are replies on her thread.

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 09:49

There are christenings in Middlewich for Mary (3/9/1855) and James (13/9/1856), both giving father Joseph and mother Ann. There is also one for John 19/4/1859 naming same parents.

So if this is the same Joseph, he buried first wife Mary in 1847, then married again after 1851 to an ANN, then again in 1860 to Elizabeth Jackson. So I'm guessing Ann must have died 1859/60.

This could be a possibility??

Ann Simpson
Event Type: Burial
Event Date: 02 May 1860
Event Place: , Middlewich, Cheshire, England
Gender: Female
Age (Formatted): 46y

Added: This could also be the widow Ann Simpson from the 1851 census - he was recorded as her brother in law, but I wonder?? It wouldn't be the first time a widow got together with her dead husbands brother. The only marriage I can see in Cheshire for a Joseph to an Ann is in 1847 in Warrington - and she is Ann Simpson.

Marriages Sep 1860
Burgess Mary Northwich 8a 355
COOPER Joseph Northwich 8a 355
xxxJackson Elizabeth Northwich 8a 355
xxxSimpson Joseph Northwich 8a 355

So also married just after 1851, and that wife died, so wrong person?

I wondered if this is George's father, Joseph, but it says 'unmarried' not 'widower' on the image.
His birthplace could be Kinderton not Hinderton.

I can't however find Joseph and Mary together after 1841 ......

..... and Elizabeth, age 10, is already out at work, as a Servant, in the 851.
