Not sure if you are still doing research on this family but I have a connection to the Hazel family.......not sure if it's yours or not but I can mention it to someone who has done a lot of research on the Hazels.

Horrible isn't it when you have a dead end. Still, when I started researching all I had to go on was my friends mother Mary Ann Meadley (who told us she didn't know her mother) and Mary Ann's father Thomas Meadley. With the help of Liverpool register office I found out what a terrible life they all had in and out of various workhouses for years.Through Genes and Ancestry I managed to track down the mother Ann Lloyd. I have gone backwards quite a lot but Sarah was the last link forward. We found out about her through Liverpool Register Office but don't know if Mary Ann even knew she had a sister. She certainly never mentioned her when she was alive but then she was very secretive about her past altogether. However, when you see what an awful childhoo she had and goodness knows what might have happened to her in the 5 yes she spent in a cottage home ,it isn't really surprising that she didn't want to talk about it.
Thankyou for your help on my behalf. It is much appreciated.
Best regards
Wendy

I have submitted the alternative Wendy as it is clearly Meadley on the image so it may help anyone else searching.

Thomas and Ann's address was Holly Street on Mary's baptism.

From the information on the birth certificate it certainly looks like Sarah was Mary's sister or half sister. She just seems to have vanished!

Success that time!!.

It won't put Meadley to Madley.

Sorry, meant Meadley to Meadley.

katqueen Report 5 Nov 2014 19:25

Sorry root gatherer. I completely misunderstood you. I thought you were going to do it the other way round and change the Meadley to Meadley. Please go ahead and thanks. Yes Sarah's birth was registered under her mothers married name( spelt Meadley) and says formerly Lloyd. The address on the birth certificate is 16 Thistle Terrace, Rose Place, sub district of Scotland, Liverpool. Thomas and Ann married on June 20th 1897 in Holy Trinity Parish Church, Liverpool. Residence at time of marriage Holly Street, Liverpool. No Sarah was Mary Anne only sibling.

Was Sarah's birth registered under her mother's married name please? Did it also give the mother's maiden surname please? Would the address on the birth certificate help?

When and where did Thomas and Ann marry please?

Did Mary Ann have any other siblings?

Sorry Wendy, don't understand why you don't want the Madley entry corrected to Meadley which is what is clearly written on the actual image.

Hi again Gwyn. I think you are absolutely right and this is not my Sarah. Have just looked for other Sarah Medleys whose birth and death match and found one born in Durham. When you look at the death for Sarah Hazel she died in Durham although she lived in Fylde. Possibly died while visiting relatives. This puts me right back to 1911 and her in Olive Mount Children's Home in the census. There is no other record of marriage or death under Meadley so can only go back to my original 2 assumptions that she was either adopted or part of the child
migration scheme. It looks like I will never know as I will be almost 80 when the 1921 census is published so doubt if I will still be doing this. Very disappointing as she was the last link in a very sad family history.
Best regards
Wendy

Hello Gwyn. I am afraid I don't know the witness names when Sarah married Leonard. When I originally thought it was my Sarah I sent for the marriage certificate and immediately discarded it when it came as her father was not named as Thomas Meadley but someone different. There was a mix up with GRO over her birth certificate and it eventually came weeks after the marriage certificate. I was shocked to see that there was no father named on it. I assume that this is because Thomas Meadley was not the father. I then wondered if the man named on the marriage cert could be her biological father who made contact with her at some point after her mother died in 1911. In the 1911 census her name is incorrectly spelt and her age given as 3 although she would have been nearly 5. I now can't find that marriage certificate so am going to send for it again. Sorry this is not really very helpful

What were the witness names when Sarah married Leonard?

When Sarah HAZEL died her age was given as 63, which doesn't match with a birthdate of 1906, so I'm not convinced that they are one and the same Sarah.

In my own tree, I spent some time hunting MEDLEY without success only to find it should have been WEDLEY.

Have you considered any Sarah WEDLEY records after 1911, incase she had been wrongly transcribed as such?

Root gatherer. If you look closely at the baptism for Mary Ann the names are quite clearly Meadley not Madley. Please don't submit a correct to Ancestry as the family name is definitely Meadley. I know this as I am doing the research for Mary Ann Meadley's daughter. Thanks Wendy

The correct name of the family is Meadley but it has been mistranscribed as Madley , Medley, Meadly and even Meddlie.
